  • As useless as JPEGs to Helen Keller...

I won’t even attempt to follow the game thread tonight, I just logged off last night and gave up, all the crying about the strike zone kills it for me. Too many people don’t even know what they are seeing, but just know we are getting cheated again. I would love to see that game with a K zone on it, but our fans would swear they weren’t using the same box, I am pretty sure.

Google the video of last years LSU-Oregon St game, there is overhead views of strikes being called that were inside the chalk line of the opposite batters box, in favor of LSU. We didn’t have anything close to that, from what I saw.

Well, as someone who pitched and coached overseas until I was 33, I wouldn't consider myself a typical person who doesn't know what I'm seeing.  The strike zone last night was wider than most for both teams, and it favored lefties because the home plate ump tended to set up slightly to the glove side of the catcher.  OSU threw nothing but lefties, so it favored them more, but Cronin received the same benefits (although limited to the 9th inning).

We play the victim very well.

See I saw it as being high too but it was frustratingly inconsistent in that area.

I felt like it was high for breaking pitches and low for fastballs.  However, it didn't seem to change based on which jersey was throwing it.

Dari Nowkhah just told an awesome story about DVH on Bo's show. Said he used to work in Lincoln and cover Nebraska. One time, DVH let media members who played baseball help work his baseball camps. So one day DVH is driving Dari to the camp and they're talking jobs, this is early 2000 after DVH has taken Nebraska to two CWS, and they're talking about dream jobs...and DVH says "Dari, the Arkansas job. That's my job. I would have to go. That's my place"

Love it

Love Peterson in the booth.  Ran into the sec crew at the drover lounge Monday night.  He wasn’t that personable.  Laura Rutledge is unbelievably gorgeous in real life.  E. Perez is extremely nice.  He stopped and talked for about 10 min.  He is super impressed with Fayetteville.  He kept complimenting our fans and Baum.  We’ve left an undeniable impression with Perez.

Arkansas will throw Kacey Murphy against Oregon St's Bryce Fehmel. Murphy is 8-4 with an ERA of 3.15, while Fehmel is 10-1 with an ERA of 3.12. Murphy has fastball speed around 93, while Fehmel's fastball might touch 90. Fehmel is much better with the curve, slider, and change up.
However, Fehmel, as the Saturday starter for OSU, has started 19 games this season for the Beavers, which means that he was pulled before the 5th inning in 8 of his starts, presumably because those teams got in on him early. Although there could be another reason for leaving before the 5th, but the previous reason is most likely.
Murphy has given up 14 homers, Fehmel 11 (more than twice as many of Heimlich). Murphy has struckout 81 batters in 97 innings, while Fehmel has 63 strikeouts in 111 innings work.

These stats are from 2 weeks ago.

Michaelt

The hogs need to get on Fehmel early and take the fight away from the Beavers. A couple good UA innings in the first four should be enough to take the wind out of OSU's sails.

Thanks Wilson.  Have to admit that blows my mind.  I just took it for granted that there were defined "limits."  With that in mind, it would be very interesting to know what different limitations certain HC's restrict themselves/their pitching coaches to.

There is that one rule, it's called the Charley Boyce rule, I think it says "as long as the arm is still physically attached at the shoulder, a pitcher can continue to pitch".

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas relied on a pitcher who threw
14 1/3 innings and 203 pitches in two days and a catcher who caught
four games in that time to beat Wichita State twice Sunday and win
an NCAA regional baseball title.

Charley Boyce threw the final 7 2/3 innings in Sunday's second
game -- just a day after throwing 99 pitches in a losing effort
Saturday -- and beat Wichita State 4-3. Catcher Brady Toops forced
the deciding game when his two-out, ninth-inning grand slam gave
Arkansas an 11-9 victory in the first game of the day.

Boyce (9-2) relieved Daryl Maday in the second inning and he
kept Wichita State off balance after giving up two doubles in the
third. He retired 19 of the last 23 batters he faced.

Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said he and pitching coach Dave
Jorn started cringing every time they asked Boyce if he could go
back out for another inning.

"They kept coming up to me after every inning and asking me how
was I feeling," Boyce said. "I told Coach Jorn in the seventh
that I hadn't come this far to come out now."

Arkansas, which had to beat Wichita State twice Sunday after
losing to the Shockers 4-3 on Saturday, will host Florida State in
an NCAA Super Regional next weekend.

Wichita State coach Gene Stephenson criticized Van Horn's
decision to leave Boyce in so long.

"We're two different types of programs," Stephenson said. "We
would never pitch a guy like that under any circumstances for any
victory. I don't care if it's a national championship."

Van Horn defended his decision, especially since Boyce is not a
power pitcher. The sophomore can throw in the high-80s, but he was
topping out at 84 mph on Sunday.

"It's a tough call. Would I do it again? Yes," Van Horn said.
"This is our team and that's the way we've played all year. I'm OK
with it. He can say whatever he wants to say."

I think you and I saw it about the same, fastball above the belt was seldom if ever a strike, but the same height with a break to it was a strike.

Standard rotation has Costello at home plate tonight. Unless college does it different, then he could be down the  first base line tonight. Seeing as he was 2nd base for the Mistake-OSU game, and 1st base for our game, he'll be at the plate tonight. Unless DVH has pulled some gigantic magical strings.

That has not been the rotation in prior years Championship series.

You have 2 umps who were out of the game last night (there are 8 total in Omaha) - in previous years the umps who were at 1B and behind the plate have sat out game 2.

TebowHater has previous years rotation posted in another thread.
If that rotation holds true - Costello won't be anywhere on the field tonight.

AFWarrior83

The beavers choked last night and will be looking for redemption in game 2. Arkansas needs to open up a can early to limit momentum. Hogs just need to finish this tonight. (screw a game three!) BRING HOME THAT NATTY! 🐗⚾️🏆

When we win the CWS, we'll be only the 4th team in history to win a NC in the big three - Football, Basketball, & Baseball, with the others being Michigan, Ohio State, & Florida. Not bad company to be in, if I do say so myself!

You forgot UCLA.

I like Kyle Peterson, wish they'd have someone other than Ravech with him on the CWS finals.

Our average coming into last night was .302 against righties and .301 against lefties. We can't hit lefties has been a myth.

Maybe we can't hit good lefties...idk.

Okay on blood pressure. But I got a major lump in my throat. Trying to keep breathing.
