Schools with championships in the Big 3 sports
« on: June 22, 2018, 11:15:26 pm »

If Hogs win the national championship in baseball, they will be the the second school in the modern era to win championships in baseball, football and basketball.  The other school is Florida.

I define the modern era as 1963 and forward. I picked this year based on high level analytics that were developed by a team of Harvard computer scientists.

Michigan won it all in baseball in 1962. Too bad they missed the modern era by one year. Suckas. And cheaters too.  Ohio State won it all in baseball in 1966 but their basketball championship was in 1960. They are cheaters too.

Prior to the modern era Cal and Stanford mostly won championships in all three sports.  But no one cares, much less any Cal or Stanford fans.

Cal - baseball 1947 and football 1920-22 and basketball 1959.

Stanford - 1926 football and 1943 basketball and baseball 2 more recently.

Then there is UCLA - lots of basketball championships now we know based on rampant cheating and baseball in 2013 but their football is laughable back in 1954.

Maryland and Michigan State and
Syracuse have won championships in both basketball and football but not baseball.

National Championships in 3 different sports
« Reply #1 on: June 23, 2018, 03:57:18 pm »

If we when the championship then we would have one in each of the three major sports. football, basketball and baseball. For all you brainiacs out there what other schools have done this?  I know Florida has and I can think of several that have won in two different sports.

Hard to believe that no team from Texas is on that list, what with all the shenanigans some of them pulled thru the swc years

According to the ESPN crew calling our game last night, Arkansas’s only NC outside of track and cross country is the 1994 basketball championship. Someone needs to tell them the NCAA recognizes 1964.

Those Florida dates are impressive. They have to be the best overall sports program in the country right now.

Absolutely not meant as a prediction on my part -- thus no mention of Arkansas in the list.

Right. Hey, we're just talking here. That's all. Not planning the victory parade route (reference to the Dallas Mavericks and our mayor at the time.  :(  )

Depending on how far back you delve into college football history and how much credence you give the various groups below, you might add the following two schools to Cylinder's list:

Stanford:
Baseball:    1987, 1988
Basketball: 1942
Football:     1926 (Helms Athletic Foundation, National Championship Foundation)

California:
Baseball:    1947, 1957
Basketball: 1959
Football:     1920 (Billingsley, Football Research, Helms, Houlgate, National Championship Foundation)
                 1921 (Boand, Football Research)
                 1922 (Houlgate, National Championship Foundation)
                 1923 (Houlgate)
                 1937 (Dunkel, Helms)

This link shows the history of integration and why picking 1963 is an accurate date for the modern era. https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/4nvwen/oc_mapping_integration_in_college_football/

I wasn’t implying we have won anything yet. You will notice I said if we win. But I think are chances are very good

Add track in there and call it the "Big 4". Now see how that narrows down the field.

Regarding track, is that outdoor, indoor, or both?  They are considered separate national championships, correct?
