Summer league assignments
« on: June 19, 2018, 04:25:07 pm »

Has it been discussed where our kids will be playing summer league? I'd really like to see Bonnin in the Cape league against good competition. He needs reps. I feel he could have the most upside of any pitcher on our roster if he can get command of his fastball and develop something off speed.

Not saying I disagree with you, but I think who his pitching coach would be should be a big factor about where he goes.

We watched some Cape ball a few years ago......really a fun and relaxed environment. And wood bats to boot. And good ice cream to double boot

So what is the difference between each league? I know Cape is the best, correct? If so, how is Martin not there?

Cape is typically where the elite players sign.  Most of the league assignments are done before the season.  Sure, Martin would be a Cape player, but he signed with the Cali team.  Much like Fletcher last year.

Maybe ole Martin wanted to experience the California sunshine with blondes, tans and bikinis. Would sure beat all the pale skin up in the Northeast.

UCA, I thought I saw a report somewhere about team USA - that Paul Mainieri would be coaching the team this summer, and he was looking forward to working with KJerstad, and I thought he said Cronin or maybe Martin ... you have any info on that?

None of our guys in the Northwoods are hitting much.  Nesbitt is batting like .260 with no pop. Turney has like 9 hits in 56 ab, so batting below the mendoza line, although 3 of those have been homers. He got off to a dreadful start, but put together an ok little 4 game hit streak this week.

Word I have seen is that Fletcher and Cronin are going although neither is on the roster right now.  With that said, the only two players on the roster currently still playing are Adley Rutschman who catches for Oregon State and should be a top 10 pick and Josh Jung who is the 3B for Texas Tech.

Don't worry though as Mainieri has made sure to invite Duplantis, Watson, and Hess to tryouts for his team.  I would assume Kjerstad and Martin will be invited if those three guys got invited.  Although, that could just be a coach watching out for his guys.  Would figure Mainieri would have invited Daniel Cabrera as well.

Just looking over some of guys to see how they are doing
California League
Angus Denton has a 1.59 ERA in just 5.2 innings pitched
Easton Murrell has 1 hit in 5 ABs
Patrick Wickland has been pitching but I'm not sure if Wade Beasley has been and can't find any stats

Northwoods League
Ben McClain .133 BA with 14 SO in 30 ABs
Jacob Nesbit .253 BA
Cole Turney .143 BA with 3 HRs.  Has 36 SOs in 63 ABs

Texas Collegiate League
Brady Disher .053 BA

Perfect Game Collegiate League
Derek Ripp .250 BA
Dillon Lifrieri (signee) .182 BA
Andrew Stanley .243 BA

That's about all I could find.  There isn't anyone tearing it up

Glad to see these two playing summer ball against college players as well.  It's almost like you are getting a RS Freshman to campus.  Will be interesting to see how they do.

Stanley has hit 3 2Bs out of 9 hits.  Has drawn 8 walks and struck out 10 times which is promising.  Also stolen 3 bases.  A lot to like out of a young guy who just graduated high school.

Lifrieri has a 2B as well in only 11 ABs.  Drawn 2 walks and struck out 2 times.  Stolen a base as well.

Team USA announced their official roster today and both Cronin and Fletcher made the 24 man roster:

https://www.usabaseball.com/news/usa-baseball-reveals-2018-collegiate-national-team-roster/c-282820688?tid=216631700

LSU is already guaranteed with three men on the 24 man roster in Antoine Duplantis, Zach Watson, and Zach Hess.  All three were draft eligible this year.  While all three players are talented, I disagree with their selection over someone like Heston Kjerstad or Casey Martin based purely on this season.

I think that is the same team that Spoon played on a few years ago.  Believe they play their All-Star Game at like midnight since it is still light out.  Although, the ASG might have passed with how late we played this year.

Did McLain get released from Duluth? I see he has stats but on their stats page he has an X beside his name. Looked like him & Turney both are struggling.

McLain is at a juco and released from Arkansas.   Turney hitting .132 with 39ks and only 3 hrs. This is out of  68 abs. Not great . I have never seen more power in batting practice, can hit 500' bombs.  That being said he has struggled in games with avg and Ks he has a great arm and good speed and power but cannot hit for avg and strikes out way too often. This was even prior to injury .  He has all the tools to be great just has not pulled it together. I was hoping Thompson would fix this   I don't see him in our lineup next season unless he can turn it around fast. but by summer numbers he still has a lot of work to do.

Martin is not going, heard Heston was not either.  Both had long seasons and think they are getting a break really no benefit going for the last 4 weeks.  The freshman pitchers are going , had long season but did not throw much so need the work.

So Turney has the lowest BA on the team out of the regular starters, leads the team in Ks, but leads his team in HRs and RBIs. I did see a replay of him hitting an oppo double in the LF corner yesterday

Would be nice if they stayed in town and just worked out all summer. HK could carry another 15lbs of muscle easy.

I couldn't find anything on Franklin.  But there are so many summer leagues out there
Angus Denton is having a good summer.  He has a 1.35 ERA, 10 Ks, 3 BB, and a WHIP of .6.  He should be useful out of the pen next year.  McFarland is off to a good start going 4/13.

Franklin is probably playing in a high school summer league.  While more and more high school seniors are playing in collegiate summer leagues, it is still a small percentage which do.

I'm just wondering if Denton will be on the roster next year since he did not pitch at all this year.  He would be a nice piece to have as a righty specialist.

Good to see on McFarland.  Hopefully there is an extra base hit or two in those four hits.

That is insane about Cockrell.  He was a solid DH for them.  With the mention of Cockrell, I looked up Ole Miss and what to expect for next year.

Their offense is going to be really good.  They hit .300 as a team and will return 7 of nine starters as they only lose Fortes and Golson.  They have options behind the plate in Cooper Johnson who is truly elite defensively, but has struggled at the plate.

They lost all three weekend starters and a key arm in the pen in Woolfolk.  They did get Caracci and Olenek back though.

Needless to say, the SEC West is going to be loaded yet again.

Bonnin gets first outing in the cape, gave up one hit in 2 1/3 innings on pitch count. 3ks.  Had 2 errors behind him to give 1 unearned run. The scoring program does not count errors on runs or hits. But play by play shows errors.  So over overall 2 1/3. 1 hit 1 walk 3ks  0 er.  Lived at 95/96.

This is huge if he develops like he can with multiple pitches.  If Bolden, Ramage, and Bonnin all develop to be big time pitchers as sophmores, then that will go a long way in having a well rounded team.
