Benintendi
« on: May 28, 2018, 04:29:29 pm »

After a very slow start to the season, Benintendi has warmed up. Another big day today raised his average to .292. Here's a good article to bring you up to date.

He touched up my braves the other day for a triple and a bomb. They are a solid squad. We battled them but they are scary on offense. We did get one at fenway so I consider it a successful trip

They have two of the top five hitters in the league in Betts and Martinez.  Getting the rest of that offense going makes it downright scary.

Benintendi has settled in well at Boston.
Some players just don't handle the pressure - it hasn't seemed to bother him at all.
I hope to see him playing LF for the Sox for many more years.

Iím on my trip to the Regionals and it is my break time from driving, so Iím filling time and thought Iíd update Benintenfis stats and where he stands in the majors. Going into tonightís game, these are his stats and where he stands among ALL Major League Players.

Batting avg.-.294,  35th
On Base %- .376,  26th
Hits-               59, 29th
Runs-              36, T-15th
RBIs-               38, T-13
Doubles-          14, T-27
Triples-              5, T-2, prior to this year, he had a total of 2 triples, one in each of his first two years.
BB-                  28, 24th
SB-                    8, 21st, was caught stealing for the first time this year on his last attempt.
Slugging-        .517, 27th
OPS-              .893, 17th
Homeruns-          7, not top 50
Strikeouts.         36, not top 50 and thatís a good thing

Trust me when I say that these numbers will make him a big check when contract time rolls around.

And those numbers are after an really rough start...

10 hits in his last five games.
Only hitting .218 April 26th, he's now up to .294.
Since April 26th he's had 18 extra-base hits (nine doubles, three triples, six homers) over 29 games. Only five players had more in that span, and two are teammates Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez.
0.979 OPS since 4/26 is 11th in the majors.

May stats: .340/.400/.632/1.032 line, 6 homers, 7 doubles, 3 triple and 23 RBIs in 26 games.

He's on fire.

Benni is setting himself for a huge pay day in a few years with this type of production. If he doesn't sign an extension early he'll be hitting free agency at the age of 28. And if he keeps up these numbers as a perennial 20/20 guy............$$$$$$$$$$$$

Good for him!

Thought I would update my above stats. Going into tonightís game, these are his stats and where he stands among ALL Major League Players.

Batting avg.-.296,  30th, +5 from last update
On Base %- .381,  17th, +9
Hits-               64, 24th, +5
Runs-              41, 11th, +4
RBIs-              41, T-7th, +6
Doubles-         15, T-25th,+2
Triples-              5, T-4th, -2
BB-                  31, 20th, +4
SB-                   9, T-17th, +4
Slugging-        .537, 16th, +11
OPS-              .918, 14th,  +3
Homeruns-          9, not top 50, but 1 homerun from a tie for 40th
Strikeouts-        42, still not top 50

A decent last few games. Roster Resource presently lists Benintendi as the 8th best player in baseball whereas ESPN has him 13th.

After starting a play that ended up cutting down a runner at home in the Top of the 1st tonight, Benintendi singled to lead off the Boston 1st and raised his average to .300 for the first time this season. On the down side he was thrown out trying to steal second on a strikeout. Only the second time he has been caught this year.

CORRECTION: Boston challenged the play at 2B and the play was overturned. Benintendi gets his 10th stolen base instead of his second caught stealing. Then scores on a Martinez homer.

By James McCann... but it's overturned.  Beni gets the SB.

Here is a video for those not watching. Very good slide. McCann's throw beat him, Benni beat it on the slide.

Found this great article on Benintendi and how is stance and hands have changed over the course of the year and is the big reason for why he started hitting so much better.  https://www.google.com/amp/amp.si.com/mlb/2018/06/07/andrew-benintendi-boston-red-sox

I had been waiting on this to happen before updating on Benintendi. He has been hovering just below .300 for a couple of weeks. He might get to .300 during a game but by game's end he would be under .300. At least twice he finished the night at .299. Today he was 2-3 with 2 walks to finish the game batting .302 so I think a stats update is in order. +/- will designate if he has increased or decreased his player ranking in a category since the last update.

Batting avg.-  .302,  26th ,   +4
On Base %-    .390,  11th,    +6
Hits-                  76, T-15th, +9
Runs-                 49, T-  7th,+4
RBIs-                 46, T-  8th, -1
Doubles-            18, T-17th, +8
Triples-              5,   T  -4th, -2
BB-                   38,  T-13th, +7
SB-                    11, T-15th, +2
Slugging-        .552,  T-11th, +5
OPS-               .945,    10th,  +4
Homeruns-          12, T-33rd, not previously in Top 50
Strikeouts.           48, T-117, the higher ranked the better in this category
WAR                   2.3, T- 24,  first time I've included this stat

A pretty good 9 days since the last update

Thanks - I've got Comcast - I'll check on that cause I hate missing any of the Red Sox games.
I've got all the additional Fox sports channels - need to figure out how to get NESN.
MLB network shows a lot of the Red Sox games - I watched that first game in Seattle.

Unless they are playing KC, STL, Houston or Texas Rangers it will be blacked out on Directv. They are pretty aggressive with their blackouts. the only time i really found having the sports package useful was during college FB season. Maybe Comcast is not as aggressive but I would check before spending the money. You can get the MLB package that is kind of like Sunday ticket for the NFL. That removes all restrictions and gives you all games, but it is around $200 a year

First Red Sox to walk 4 times and hit a homer in the same game since Ortiz did it in 2007. Benintendi has been in a little slump and his average had fallen 20 points so maybe this will jumpstart him.

Actually last 11. He walked in a pinch hit appearance in the first game of the series. 6 hits and 5 walks including that one. I didn't post this earlier as I did not want to jinx him. I know it makes no difference in what happens but I have to be superstitious.

Boston just got out of a runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs as Porcello struck out the next two and then induced a fly ball out. Benintendi bats 3rd in the top of this inning(8th).

We didn't jinx him, though - the announcers on the MLB network just took credit for jinxing him.

Ha!!

It was flippin. If he wasn't such a nice guy I'd recommend a 7 day ban.

It's been about 4 weeks since I updated and Benintendi ran into a small slump that saw his average go from .302 to .279. A great last two days has seen him rebound some. +/- is the difference in the category since the last update.

Batting avg.-    .293,  30th ,   -4
On Base %-     .379,  22nd,   -11
Hits-                  98, T-19th,   -4
Runs-                 65,     6,     +1
RBIs-                 55, T- 24th, -16
Doubles-            22, T- 26th,  - 9
Triples-              5,   T  -7th,   -3
BB-                   48,  T-16th,   -3
SB-                    16, T-10th,  +5
Slugging-        .515,  T-27th, -16
OPS-               .894,    19th,   -9
Homeruns-          14, fell out of Top 50, -17+
Strikeouts.           66, T-103, up 14 spots, Golden Sombrero about 4-5 games ago didn't help
WAR                   2.6,      37,   -13

Certainly a rougher 4 weeks for him, but not a disaster. His power numbers have suffered the most. These stats will still make him a bunch of money.

you know I pay attention to such protocol as well!  But I thought that would have been his last AB of the game.

Benintendi is one of the five AL players on the ballot for the chance to be the last player chosen by the fans to be in the All-Star game. With Stanton on the ballot I don't like his chances. On another note, his line from Saturday of a homer, double and four walks made him only the 5th player in the last 100 years to accomplish the feat.

Benintendi is so valuable to the Red Sox.
He stepped in when Betts was on the DL and did a great job as lead off.
He can play all 3 outfield positions which gives Cora flexibility with Martinez.
Really important piece to the Boston puzzle.
