Will Austin Allen be Drafted?
« on: April 27, 2018, 01:35:33 am »

ESPN ranks him 304th of the next best players still available.  Doesn't look too promising.  No other Arkansas players are even mentioned.

Nope, might be picked up on a team after though.

Better chance being drafted by the Army than the NFL.

Damn shame. Think he had the tools and talent to be drafted but a shell of his potential due to playing behind horrific OLine coached by Baby Huey who should have been fired midway through first season here

His brother went in the 6th round.  I feel confident he goes before the 6th.  But neither Allen had the talent or variables that Mallett had and he went in the 3rd.

Austin has more talent than Brandon, but is shorter, didn't have the same senior season, and has a bigger injury concern.

I wouldn't be shocked if he was still drafted late, but I wouldn't count on it either.

Iíd probably say 80/20 no.

If he could slide in there that would be great. It would mean our last 4 QBís to start a game at QB for us got drafted. (That would include Derby)

These are his strengths and weaknesses from NFL.com. Whoever wrote this thinks his senior season ruined him with regard to getting drafted and possibly even making a roster. What CBB said about him is listed as a weakness.
https://www.nfl.com/prospects/austin-allen?id=32462018-0002-5601-179e-7f64e9949129

Strengths

Slick ball-handler in Razorbacks play-action game
Despite physical pounding he took, continued to keep eyes down the field in the midst of pressure
Climbs pocket in pass-ready position
Leads post routes to water when safeties void middle of the field
Deep ball placement was generally good
Squares shoulders to deliver the ball on rollouts
2016 tape was much better and may be weighed more by NFL teams
Allen's velocity and confidence looked much better his junior season

Weaknesses

Small quarterback with small hands
Amount of hits and sacks he's taken over last two seasons have taken a toll
Missed four games this season due to serious shoulder injury
Average arm lacked needed velocity after his injury
Former head coach, Bret Bielema believes Allen has been permanently affected by these ailments
Decision making in red zone has been poor leading to critical interceptions
Lacks feel for spatial relationship
Fails to recognize when defenders are still a hazard to his throw
Gun-shy to cut it loose when receivers were open
Hangs onto the ball for too long

I think someone will grab Austin and Henre Toliver in the last round. I really hope Ragnow isn't the only one drafted this weekend.

What kind of ahole former coach basically says "he can't do it" in the NFL? What a [CENSORED].

Yeah, cuz NFL scouts never would have been able to note these weaknesses.  He did nothing to hurt Allen that even a blind scout couldn't see.

I don't think he's going to get drafted, but if he is 100% healthy and back to the pre-beatdown junior year form, he's good enough to hang around the league in a back up role, IMO

Spot on the way i see it. Was a marginal pro prospect in 2016, was not at all in 2017. Bowl game was impressive and may have worked back into marginal status. Only argument from me would be deep ball placement was not generally good imo.

Not all here were anti-Allen boys.  And, no, the head coach shouldn't go on about his qb's weaknesses--especially where medical conditions are concerned and if they might affect his future in the NFL.

And, it could be argued that AA's weaknesses were brought on by his coach's weaknesses.

As was pointed out when the misplaced outrage about that comment first popped up, it came from a quote by CBB before the last Missouri game. He was basically complimenting him by saying despite these injuries that have effected him heís been tough and lead the team. Itís NOT, and was never in the context of his draft status or nfl capability.

I'm not saying he intended to slight him. But he said it and it's now in AA's eval. I liked BB as a guy because he just spoke his mind, but sometimes careless words or throw-away phrases can have unintended negative consequences.

It's just one data point and won't make or break AA being drafted, a FA, or making a roster. His pros and cons are known by NFL officials. He'll sink or swim on his own merit.

Whether he makes a roster or not I'm grateful he was our QB.

No. AA will not be drafted IMO. He will get signed as an UDFA and go to camp with someone, there are always teams looking for QBs plural, look at what happened to Wentz, Tannehill, Watson and several others last season.

To paraphrase the old Lays ad, "you can't have just one" when it comes to QBs. Austin will get a shot, nearly any starting QB in a Power 5 conference will get a shot if he wants one, as an UDFA.

Making it onto a roster may be another story. I wish him well, but those holding onto the ball too long and having small hands issues will be tough to overcome as well as the beating he took as a starter.

Of course, like Tyler Wilson, some of that beating was due to holding the ball too long..

I don't believe he will be drafted because his lack of arm strength is a serious issue. I wouldn't be at all surprised if his future is as a Football coach.

Both are mediocre QB's. Not NFL caliber. Brandon took half a season to get going(gimme all your excuses.)

Austin led the SEC in passing his junior year, I believe. If that's "never got going," then I dunno what is.

If he had an offensive line and a head coach who wasn't an egotistical maniac control freak who actually let his coordinators run their stuff, he probably would've been close to duplicating that last year.

Not NFL starters, yes. But clearly BA is a NFL player as he has been on 2 different NFL 53 man rostered

Austin will at the min get a UDFA deal to go to training camp

Austin Allen came in and was better as a first time starter than Brandon was (no hige surprise considering the respective timing of where each became a starter).

But Austinís junior year he came out and would make the kind of big plays in clutch situations that Brandon did not start making until maybe a third of the way through his Senior year.

Unfortunately by the end of Austinís junior year it looked like some of that poise and sharpness had already begun to be beaten out of him (Brettís biggest mistake at Arkansas was hiring Kurt). Austinís senior year unfortunately continued that trend from the start. Honestly, I was constantly suspecting that he had not been 100% healthy when the first game started.

So maybe Austin was/is more talented than Brandon. But, in terms of draft stock, the trends that their respective college careers ended on may result in Austin not being really considered as a draft choice while Brandon obviously was.

lol, what in the world makes you think austin has more talent than brandon?

AA as a senior 56% 1427 yards 10 TD 5 INT

BA as a senior 66% 3440 yards 30 TD 8 INT

AA is not getting drafted, and will be lucky to pick up a FA deal.

there are too many good QBs on practice squads in NFL, why would anyone sign a mediocre at best QB?

no offense to AA, but I hope he got his degree and becomes successful in whatever career path he chooses.

That was Josh Allen. Younger brother of Brandon and Austin, but shipped off to Wyoming where he became more successful than his brothers.

He's like the reverse Cooper Manning.

The Patriots are needing a QB to get ready for when Brady retires, but I doubt they would consider Austin.

I wouldn't be surprised if Belichick gets a QB in the 2nd round, and I wouldn't be surprised if he picks Mason Rudolph.

To me, Mason Rudolph from Oklahoma State is the best QB in the draft.

Whoever picks him will be getting a QB that is not having to use hype to prop himself up like those other QBs are.  Rudolph is just a very solid QB.

Dude, Baker Mayfield has been the most efficient QB ever to play the game in his last 2 seasons. That's not hype.

Brandon Weeden was also a very solid QB at Oklahoma State.

lol, what in the world makes you think austin has more talent than brandon?

AA as a senior 56% 1427 yards 10 TD 5 INT

BA as a senior 66% 3440 yards 30 TD 8 INT

AA is not getting drafted, and will be lucky to pick up a FA deal.

there are too many good QBs on practice squads in NFL, why would anyone sign a mediocre at best QB?

no offense to AA, but I hope he got his degree and becomes successful in whatever career path he chooses.

Couldn't have said it better!

Iíd probably say 80/20 no.

If he could slide in there that would be great. It would mean our last 4 QBís to start a game at QB for us got drafted. (That would include Derby)

Um, wouldn't that be five??  Mallett, Wilson, Derby, BA and AA.  Or am I missing somebody...

He will 100% get a UDFA deal. Casey Dick got an UDFA deal

Probably wonít make a roster. Practice squad isnít out of the question not sure itís likely either.

But showing his SR stats is really irrelevant considering his injuries and players around him injuries.

This sounds like a Disney movie...

Yeah.  One where they shoot the family pet.
