A Hogvillian ought to have some prerogative at a moment like this to post in the wrong forum.

Thanks to Richard for a nice article on my son, Matthew. He is very proud to be a Razorback and excited about going to school in Fayetteville.

NoogaHog:
Congrats!

I must have missed you posting this in the recruiting forum, because I had no idea.

But congrats!  You must be very proud.  I've always enjoyed your posts, so now I have another reason to root for Matthew!

Thanks!  It hasn't been posted yet in the Recruiting forum.  Richard posted today to Arkansas Online.  He usually posts himself in Recruiting but I figure I'd post here for all my old friends who don't get over there much.  There have been a few other articles here and there, but this is the best.

pigture perfect:
Welcome to the hill, Matthew.

I avoided that one tonight.  Give 'em a break.  Everyone gets up for Kentucky.  We played hard.  They just have too many thoroughbreds.  We may get another shot in St. Louis.

hoghearted:
Congrats to you and your family, sir. Lots of hard work certainly paid off, with even more to come. Hope to see him take the field soon!

FANONTHEHILL:
I’ve enjoyed our conversations and hate the fact Matthew and Cooper won’t be teammates.  He’s got a great future in front of him and he’s going to have a great time as a Razorback.

OneTuskOverTheLine™:
I can't wait until he makes his first tackle and shows off his work as a safety..! Somebody is going to think they got lucky when one doesn't go over their head and them WHAM.!!

Inhogswetrust:
Congrats!

I hope he never has to make a tackle.......

I was counting on Cooper to be a mentor for Matthew but am very happy for his success. I have a feeling the people of Arkansas haven’t heard the last from him.

oldhawg:
Congratulations to your son and his family.  Proud moment.

Boss Hog in the Arkansas:
I'll make sure I take some time out today and give it a good read!

The NewEra:
I hope Matthew lives out every dream he ever had as a player for the Razorbacks.

If ever a post deserves top spot in MMBQ, it's this one. Congrats.

True, but ain't it good to know you have a kicker who runs a 4.5 to 4.6 40, knows how to tackle and played Free Safety prior to college just in case..?

LZH:
Congrats dad, Matthew, and the whole family......that's a big deal.

Mo_Better_Hogs:
I saw this mentioned before, good to see it again. Congrats bphi11ips.

elksnort:
Good deal!

Very nice looking, well-spoken young man.
Seems you did a good job Dad!!!

On my list of requirements for a kicker/punter, it would be towards the bottom. I don't care if the go around screaming "I kick a touchdown" , as long as they make all their XP's & FG's, and allow zero return yardage, lol.

What it does say is that he is also very athletic.  I am for having and utilizing threats all over the field.  Congrats to the entire family and to the Hogs for what looks like a great pickup in more ways than one.

You bet that's good to know. Over the course of a season, how many times does it come down to the kicker? WAY too often.

That little quality could save a ball game. Sure, the kid's GOT to be a good kicker, no doubt about that, but what a double blessing to have that kind of athleticism as well.

oldhawg:
Hope you personally follow in the footsteps of Fan On The Hill and give interesting, accurate insight to what's going on within the football program.

Oh, I like them athletic, but if they go all headhunter approach, the opposing teams tend to assign someone to you to make sure you don't do too much. They tend to "block" you when you're more vernable. Just play safety and make the tackle when he comes to you.

NuttinItUp:
Congrats! Glad to have him on board.

I'll keep an eye out for his number on gamedays.

Oklahawg:
Congrats, my friend.

bphi11ips:
Thanks to everyone for the nice comments and congrats.  +1 to you all!

oldhawg - I don't plan to say anything about the team, coaches, players, etc., while Matthew is a Razorback. I hope everyone understands. FOTH did a great job and was always judicious with his comments.  There may be a time when Matthew would approve something for me to share, but for the time being I plan on staying mum.  I wouldn't want to say anything that might embarrass him or get him in trouble with the coaches!

Before I quit talking about Matthew, I'll add a little bit to what Richard wrote.

Brentwood has been a good source for kickers over the years.  John Vaughn and Kody Bliss were both kickers who graduated from Brentwood Academy in 2003 and went to Auburn.  John was a placekicker and Kody was a punter.  Brian Davis graduated from Brentwood Academy in 2010 and had a great career at Arkansas State.  Tucker Day played with Matthew at Brentwood High and is now on scholarship at Mississippi State.  Tucker graduated in 2017 and punted in the Army All American Bowl.  He started off last year as Mississippi State's placekicker.  Long-term, I think Tucker has great potential as a punter.  But like Matthew, Tucker is a combo kicker.

All of the kickers I just mentioned, including Matthew, were mentored at some point by a Yoda-like kicking coach named Charlie West.  Charlie was 4'11" on his best day, which made him an ideal Rugby running back in his early days.  He later coached soccer at several Brentwood area schools.  Everyone loved Charlie.  Sadly, he passed away from Alzheimer's a couple of years ago.

Charlie started working with Matthew when he was about 12 or 13, and he got Matthew involved with Kohl's Kicking when Matthew was a rising high school freshman.  Matthew kicked at Kohl's camps and showcases for four years.  We highly recommend the program for anyone who is serious about kicking at the college level.

I want to give some context to Matthew's Kohl's ranking.  He was ranked 10th as a punter and 13th as a placekicker at the end of 2016, when he was invited to participate at an event held in conjunction with the Under Armour All-American Game called the Underclassman Challenge on December 31, 2016.  The Challenge is held the day before the game and features competition between the top junior specialists in the country.  Matthew was excited about being invited and was eager to compete.  However, Matthew also played goalie for the Brentwood hockey team. Although we didn't know it at the time, he had a torn meniscus in his left knee (plant leg), we think maybe suffered in the net in December, and his knee was swollen and sore at the Challenge.  It was the only time he charted poorly at a Kohl's competition, but his performance dropped him far down the rankings.  We had his knee checked when he got home and discovered the torn meniscus.  It was repaired in February, and he was as good as new when he won the kickoff competition at Arkansas's camp in June, but it was too late for him to climb back up for the 2018 class to where he had been ranked by Kohl's for a couple of years.  The week he won at Arkansas, Matthew won the punting competition at Tennessee's camp and the kickoff competition at Western Kentucky.  He hit a 64-yard FG at Kohl's June camp in Nashville and is reliable from 55 in.  He taught himself to kick without a tee from an early age (he didn't have one) and never used tees in competitions.  He kicked with a 1/2" tee in high school, because you can.  Same concept as using a tee on a Par 3.

Former Tennessee All SEC kicker James Wilhoite has been Matthew's personal coach for a few years.  James Tweeted last year that he thinks Matthew is the best combo kicker in Tennessee for the 2018 class.  Matthew and Indiana-bound placekicker Charles Campbell were co-champions last Summer of James' "Friday Night Lights" competition featuring the best kickers in Tennessee.  Charles is Kohl's 6th ranked placekicker in the class of 2018.  I say all of this only because I believe the Kohl's ranking is a little misleading where potential is concerned.  Also, for the first time, Matthew will be concentrating his full time and attention to kicking as a specialist.  He is really excited about that and will be following Coach Tru's Workout Manual from now until July 2, when he will enroll for Summer classes.  He'll then report as one of the 105 for Fall camp.

Matthew is a good student and a member of National Honor Society.  One of the deciding factors where Arkansas is concerned was the unbelievable academic support the UA provides to student athletes.  All schools have a support system, but Arkansas's is a cut above the others we saw.

Brentwood High School was upset in the second round of the Tennessee 6A playoffs by Cane Ridge, who went on to the championship game.  Brentwood was ranked 6th in the state when the playoffs began.  At the end of the season, Matthew was elected by his teammates as one of four team captains.  He is most proud of that.  He was also one of four football players to earn the Bruins Excellence Award, which has been awarded for many years to players who maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA throughout high school and log at least 100 hours of community service.  His mom and I are pretty proud of that one.

So thanks to all of you for your congratulations and well wishes.  It means a lot to me.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think Matthew would be a Razorback.  He almost didn't go to the camp last June.  Arkansas's camp started early on a Saturday morning, and Matthew and his mom were finishing up at Tennessee's camp at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.  They drove all night to get to Fayetteville.  We had heard Arkansas was not looking for a kicker, but Matthew wanted to make the trip, I think, because he loves the Hogs and Fayetteville.  Of course, we all do in my family.  In any event, we're thrilled it worked out the way it did.  As a Razorbacks fan, I know they got a great team player who will always give it his best shot.

mevskithog:
Congrats! Hope to see him take the field soon!

theFlyingHog:
Congrats!

18 year old me would have gone to Arkansas but 34 year old me would go to West Point

Cooper will be around.  He’s got three years of Law School ahead of him and the staff has said that they want him around the building.  They will definitely be able to meet up.

Congrats!!  I live right down the road in Franklin. It’ll be great to keep up with one of our local boys. Good luck!

oldhawg:
Having read Mathew's kicking and character resume I am fully impressed with his credentials and wish him all the success possible.

Also I totally understand about your position on commenting/not commenting on things happening within the Razorback program.

Thanks for these posts regarding Mathew though.  As others, I will follow his progress with interest.

Dark Helmet Hog:
Congrats and WPS!

That is awesome.

At first I’ll admit I was pretty happy personally thinking about how cool it’s going to be to see my son in a Razorbacks uniform on the sidelines.  But the best thing is knowing what kind of man he’ll be if he does this for four years while he’s getting his degree.

There’s been a lot of debate here about the merits vs. risks of football since CTE has been so widely publicized. It’s a serious issue that needs to be further researched, and solutions need to continue to develop. But while visiting various universities and meeting so many wonderful coaches and support staff everywhere, and after hearing from players what a day in their lives is like, I’m convinced more than ever that college football is about as good as it gets when it comes to preparing young men for life. It takes great discipline to be a college football player.  I think sometimes we don’t give these young men nearly the credit they deserve.

Thanks again to everyone for the congrats. Just scrolled through Matthew’s Twitter this morning for the second time. I’m not a Twitter guy but probably should be. You can track Matthew’s recruiting from the beginning on his Twitter page.  Pretty interesting the way it works. I need to figure out how to save and print for posterity.  I always wonder how things will be passed down to future generations now that we rarely keep hard photos.
