Some Junior College Football Teams are in peril
« on: February 05, 2018, 07:14:00 pm »

In this particular case, in Arizona. How long before it starts to catch up with other JC's in other states that are operating at a loss? And how could this negatively effect kids who may be great athletes but need JC to get their grades up? Sad thing.

The state's largest community-college district will eliminate football after the 2018 season.

Citing financial constraints, Maricopa County Community College District officials said Monday they are ending the district-sponsored football programs at the four colleges that now have football: Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa and Glendale community colleges.

District spokesman Matt Hasson said the decision to eliminate the sport was not made lightly.

“Although this is a disappointment to our student athletes, coaching staff, and football fans, it is ultimately the right decision for the district and the long-term success of students,” he said in a statement.

“As an essential resource to the community and businesses, MCCCD must be responsible for the financial resources it has been entrusted with.”

Crazy thing is with many JUCOs, success leads to greater expenses which leads to losing the program. This very thing happened to the Mississippi County Community College Golden Suns back in the mid-80s. They won the NJCAA nationals in 82(?), advanced to the nationals many other times, all of which greatly exceeded their budget. The school soon had to disband due to financial issues.

Now it is Arkansas Northeastern College. The school is doing quite well now and is continually building and expanding.

Yeah, didn't mean the school disbanded; they disbanded the basketball program.
