Are we a team that can impose our will on our opponent?
« on: December 06, 2017, 09:22:20 am »

Let me say that I have been really excited about this team since before the season ever started. I'm not the kind of fan who gets too high or too low on a game-to-game basis. I turned the Houston game off with 4 minutes left to go and forgot about it - didn't get a Jump Ball for a couple of days to avoid the hand-wringing and doom and gloom.

I feel this has to be our year. I feel we have he right ingredients to make a good run in the tournament. Hopefully it happens, because IMO Gafford is a one and done if there ever was one, plus losing Barford and Macon. Next year will be a bit of a dip, so let's make some noise this year!

I have felt we finally have the athletes to be the kind of Richardson/Anderson team that imposes its will on their opponent. This mainly happens with Anderson teams by a frantic pace and defensive intensity. But I haven't really seen that thus far this year. Our great games have come because other teams can't stop our scoring - in our best games Macon and Barford have been almost unstoppable.

Will we reach the level of the great Richardson/Anderson teams that imposed their will on their opponent? What do you guys think? IMO Gafford is the key. He's the stud who needs to reach that level quickly and lead the team in nastiness without getting into foul trouble. Who else has that nasty edge? Barford? Thomas?

If we are able to reach that level, we won't see it consistently with this team until Conference play which is right around the time that Gafford should have most of the kinks worked out and is fully acclimated to his role.

You impose your will on another team with great defense. The rules of the game have changed such that it is really hard to play that type of defense. The offensive player has the advantage. We have 4 really good offensive players..I think that we will win a lot of games by simply having a great offense..JMO

It simply isn't possible under modern rules;  even the best teams in the game today can't do it, at any level.

I think we will be exciting and continue to run some teams out of the gym at home. But I don't really see us being a team on the level of the mid 90's championship teams.  North Carolina and Houston seemed to have a defensive plan that totally disrupted and shut us down. I think more good teams, especially on the road, will do the same to us. I totally agree if Gafford can come along and play more minutes, things could be even better. He brings interior offense into the mix. My guess is we will have a similar result as last year, competitive in conference, make the tourney, and maybe win a round.

The loss to Houston was very simple. We didn't have the defense to take them out of their game plan. They moved the ball and beat our brains out. We also didn't get back on defense nor stop penetration to the basket. They did to us what we needed to do to them. We looked on offense and defense like syrup being poured out of a bottle. You got to pay the price to be a winner. There was not the senior leadership we needed nor the coaching. Even so it was a game to open the players eyes to the weaknesses of the team. I don't like to lose, but if we learn from that game , it could really help us for the rest of the season.

I think the Hogs are a solid second-tier team this season.  That's it.  When Gafford has enough experience to work his kinks out then so will every other good true freshman player in the country.  I only follow the Razorbacks, UNC, and Duke.  We have already seen how we stack up against UNC.  Duke has five players projected as first round draft picks.  Four of them are true freshmen.

So we just played bad defense or played the wrong defense?
