8 SEC teams represented in http://D1Baseball.com  Preseason Top 25

Quote
Florida, the defending national champions, come in where it left off: at No. 1.
Four conference teams – No. 4 Arkansas, No. 8 Kentucky, No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 10 Texas A&M – help round out the top ten.

State comes in at No. 12, while Vanderbilt, who won the 2014 title, follows at No. 14. LSU winners of six titles in program history, comes in at No. 16....

Florida baseball: Reigning College World Series champs get back to work

Quote
All of the major national college baseball polls have the Gators ranked No. 1 to start the season. Because while they definitely lost some proven stars, they also return some big names as well — highlighted by a weekend rotation that should again be one of the best in the country

But like his players said, O’Sullivan doesn’t want this Florida team to feel like it’s earned anything based on past success or outside expectations. He began emphasizing that message back during fall practice and will continue to reiterate it through the preseason.

The quest starts anew.

“The preseason polls don’t mean anything. I know that sounds cliché. But everybody feels good about their team right now. I think the biggest thing for us is to be able to turn the page,” O’Sullivan said.

http://D1baseball.com  puts 10 SEC teams in its preseason projected field of 64

Quote
D1baseball.com, a site which puts out its own weekly rankings during the season and also publishes a preseason tournament projection, put 10 SEC teams in the field of 64. Their crystal ball also told them the conference would host 6 regionals.

Florida notably ranks as the No. 1 overall seed and also gets to host its own regional. Baton Rouge (LSU), Fayetteville (Arkansas), Oxford (Ole Miss), Lexington (Kentucky), and College Station (Texas A&M) are all projected as regional hosts.

Other SEC teams the site sees in the tournament include Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Auburn and South Carolina.

The SEC Country baseball power poll also had the Gators on top. Arkansas, which finished 45-19 last season, also looks to be one of the top teams to watch in 2018. The coaches poll also agrees, putting Florida and Arkansas atop the list.

There are a lot (too many) college baseball polls, but that just meant more love for Southern Miss baseball today. https://www.clarionledger.com/story/sports/college/southern-miss/blitz/2018/02/19/how-did-national-media-respond-southern-miss-sweep-mississippi-state/351002002/ … via @munzly

Southern Miss was one of the darlings of the college baseball world Monday.

Fresh off its three-game sweep of Mississippi State, the Golden Eagles found themselves fast risers in many national polls. The team went from unranked to No. 15 in D1Baseball.com’s first poll of the season. Southern Miss also went from unranked to No. 18, according to Perfect Game. Per Baseball America, the Golden Eagles moved from 21st to No. 17.

According to Perfect Game’s report, “Southern Miss was extremely shrewd in moving their Preseason All-American closer (Nick Sandlin) to the Friday night starter, setting the tone early as part of their series sweep over Mississippi State. That caused a flip-flop between the two teams in the rankings, as the Bulldogs fell out with the Eagles moving in.”

Rally Finger? How Beau Jordan, his middle finger sparked LSU baseball's series-clinching win vs. Texas

Quote
The box score reflects Beau Jordan’s fifth-inning single against Texas as relatively meaningless —

But it was what happened after that may have altered the course of LSU’s 10-5 series-clinching win against Texas. Jordan was caught by an umpire flipping his middle finger at Texas pitcher Chase Shugart. Jordan was ejected, and both the Tigers and Alex Box Stadium came to life.

"It felt like a super-regional atmosphere here tonight," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "The electricity in the stadium and the dugout, the intensity that the players were playing with."

About that intensity: After the game, LSU's players and coaches diplomatically declined to assign any additional importance to the Jordan gesture. Publicly, they said the momentum was already in hand and Jordan's actions were regrettable.

But former LSU shortstop Kramer Robertson may have accurately captured the feeling of the moment in the LSU dugout when he tweeted #RallyFinger.

LSU had just finished erasing a five-run deficit when the finger appeared, and from that point on, Texas did not offer much of a challenge. The final four innings saw LSU outscore Texas 5-0 and run away with the series win — and an opportunity to sweep at 1 p.m. Sunday, a game moved up an hour to stay ahead of forecasted rain.

Final: MTSU 4, Vanderbilt 3

Inclement weather prompted umps to call the game. Per regulation baseball rules, the game was reverted back to the seventh, which was the last completed inning.

Alonzo Jones' go-ahead grand slam in the top of the eighth is wiped from the books.
