What Calvin Anderson's decision to transfer to Texas means for Auburn's offensive line

Quote
Coveted Rice graduate transfer offensive tackle Calvin Anderson's decision to choose Texas over Auburn, Michigan and Oklahoma leaves the Tigers pursuing another offensive lineman this offseason.

Anderson, who announced his decision on Saturday, cited Texas offensive line coach Herb Hand, who began recruiting him while at Auburn, as a factor in his decision to stay close to home in Austin.

"Herb Hand coming to Texas was a large reason for me (choosing UT)," Anderson told Sports Illustrated. "Had he not come, circumstances might be different."

Auburn, which has 13 scholarship players on the offensive line and two signees arriving in the summer, still has one opening to add a graduate transfer this offseason.

Though Auburn coach Gus Malzahn confirmed graduate transfers count towards the limit of 25 signees per class, he was "not ready to say" there was only one opening for the Tigers, who signed 24 players to their 2018 recruiting class. That would imply the possibility of more than one graduate transfer, which could only happen if one of Auburn's signees gray shirts or doesn't qualify and thus doesn't count towards the 25-player cap.

Auburn still has to determine its starting center and right tackle. Had Anderson chose Auburn he was expected to either play right tackle or left tackle and Prince Tega Wanogho Jr. would've moved to right tackle.

Redshirt-freshmen Calvin Ashley and Austin Troxell have been at right tackle with the first and second-team offenses, respectively, and Prince Michael Sammons has also spent time at the position.
