The presence of rising junior Jalen Hurts and soon-to-be-sophomore Tua Tagovailoa may have dissuaded recruits at the position from coming to Tuscaloosa: https://trib.al/Qwp8GYJ

What Alabama gets in new signee Tevita Musika, first cousin of potential top-15 draft pick https://sptz.us/2pNUMeF

Quote
Tevita Musika grew up in the same household as Tevita “Vita” Vea, a former Washington standout and likely top 15 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Because both shared the same name (Tevita is the Tongan version of David), there had to be a way to distinguish the two if called upon.

There was an easy choice. Because of their completely different body shapes, Vea is 6-foot-5 and nearly 350 pounds, while Musika is 6-2 and over 350 pounds, the family decided to give them nicknames that suited their body frames.

“Their nicknames are ‘Tall Vita’ and ‘Wide Vita,’ ” College of San Mateo coach Tim Tulloch told SEC Country. “Vita Vea is ‘Tall Vita’ and Tevita Musika is ‘Wide Vita.’ ”

While Vea has received an enormous amount of attention as being one of the top players in this year’s draft, his cousin, Tevita, who signed with Alabama on Wednesday, didn’t receive any attention from schools coming out of high school and only a few expressed interest in signing him after he finished junior college.

Musika was a first-team California Community College Athletic Association All-American last season after registering 42 tackles, 6 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. Tulloch credits Alabama defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi, who led the charge on Musika’s recruitment, for landing a steal.

“Tosh always stays in touch with us,” Tulloch said. “He’s an unbelievably thorough recruiter. Recruiting is one of those things that never stops. The good ones are always making sure they know everybody. He knows about all of our top prospects here. When they decided they had a need and wanted to move on a JUCO nose guard, he knew where to go because he knew about Tevita. That’s why Tosh [.0] is where he is today because of how great of a recruiter he is.”

Alabama wanted to sign at least one more defensive lineman in the 2018 class on National Signing Day in February. The Crimson Tide had a commitment from Bobby Brown, but he ended up flipping to Texas A&M,

BREAKING: Alabama adds commitment from former Georgia DL commit Rashad Cheney Jr.

Quote
6-foot-2, 270-pound prospect said the main reason why he chose Alabama was because of a 30-minute conversation he had with Nick Saban last Friday.

“I really like Alabama because of all the off-the-field stuff, like academics,” Cheney told SEC Country. “They were telling me that it’s possible to graduate in 3 1/2 years. I would like to do that. Just going to a program like that will speak volumes on your name.

“They don’t just teach you how to play football there. They teach you how to be man. They teach you how to cook dinners and how to properly eat when you go out to eat. It’s not all about football, and that’s important.”

Cheney said there wasn’t a No. 2 school for him.

The nation’s No. 17 defensive tackle committed to Georgia in February of last year before reopening his recruitment in January. It was clear that he wasn’t wanted by the Bulldogs.

Alabama's best recruiting mystery in recent history has been solved, and none of the three held a fan base hostage for a tension-filled signing day reveal

Quote
There was no drama. No hat dancing. No ESPN cameras.

Alabama's 2019 recruiting class features three of the nation's top quarterback prospects, Pinson Valley's Bo Nix, Hewitt-Trussville's Paul Tyson and Thompson's Taulia Tagovailoa. All are now committed.

As the calendar turned from 2018 to 2019, the state's No. 1 recruiting story centered on one simple question: What will the quarterbacks do?

Now we know after Tagovailoa's surprise commitment Saturday.
