JUCO focus: Why #LSU signed its most junior college players in years, and what's behind national trend, 'JC players are important to us.' Story: https://buff.ly/2BXNUQo

Quote
Out of high school, edge rusher Travez Moore weighed 235 pounds and stood 6 foot 3 inches tall. He’s now 6-5, 256.

The high school version of tackle Badara Traore received his most recruiting interest from Cincinnati and Eastern Michigan. This fall, he had 32 scholarship offers, including 11 from Southeastern Conference programs.

Oh what a difference junior college makes.

On Wednesday, LSU signed its most junior college players (3) in a single class since 2013. Moore, Traore and guard Damien Lewis all inked with the Tigers during Day 1 of the early signing period, giving the program more JUCO players in one class than it signed in the previous three classes combined (2).

A reason for the surge is two-fold. One, the Tigers need immediate impact depth on the offensive and defensive lines because of attrition and graduation. Two, its new coaching staff isn’t as averse as the last in dabbling in the JUCO pool.

“JC guys are important to us,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. “Everywhere I’ve been I’ve always recruiting JC guys. Those guys we’re recruiting (and signed), I would think they’d come in and play.”

The 6-foot-7, 310-pound Traore is seen as an immediate option at tackle next year, a potential replacement for senior left tackle KJ Malone or right tackle Toby Weathersby, a draft-eligible junior. Moore could slip into the rotation at the hybrid edge-rushing/outside linebacker Buck spot, where draft-eligible junior Arden Key is expected to leave a void. Lewis, meanwhile, provides depth at a position group that lost five players to transfer last offseason.

AM | A full length Q&A with #LSU coach Ed Orgeron on his plan entering signing day, how Tigers ended up with 2 signees & 23 overall, the outlook for the two open spots & much more

Quote
LSU entered signing day having doled out signing papers to four prospects for four open spots in the 2018 class: Scotlandville defensive back Kelvin Joseph, receiver Ja'Marr Chase from Rummel, Alabama quarterback James Foster and Florida cornerback Patrick Surtain.

Coach Ed Orgeron had a backup plan, too, if needed in Missouri cornerback Mario Goodrich.

The wrench in the plan: When Surtain snubbed LSU for Alabama, Orgeron’s backup plan had already made his commitment to Clemson.

The coach explained at length just how the Tigers were left having signed just two players on Wednesday and 23 overall in a class that many expected to be full at 25. LSU never planned to offer the scholarship slotted for Foster to anyone else, and the Tigers were only taking one cornerback — Surtain or Plan B, Goodrich.

“First of all, we had a draft and put the four guys up we were going to give scholarships to. We had several guys that wanted to commit. I didn’t have a scholarship for him. I wasn’t going to tell them I could take their commitment. I wasn’t going to lie to them. Now, some people may do that and feel good about it. I wasn’t going to do that,” Orgeron said in a long-winded answer explaining the plan.

LSU adds commitment from Mississippi State’s backyard

Quote
Starkville, Miss., native Zach Edwards, a top inside linebacker in the 2019 class, was the second prospect from the Magnolia State to commit to LSU on Saturday. He joined 4-star defensive end Jaren Handy as the big booms of Ed Orgeron’s out-of-state junior day.

Edwards, a 3-star prospect, is a top-400 prospect nationally. He ranks as the No. 12 inside backer in the 2019 class and the No. 14 overall prospect from Mississippi.

The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Edwards is the first linebacker to join the Tigers’ 2019 class. LSU is also in a strong position with Louisiana 4-star linebacker Donte’ Starks as well as Mississippi 4-star Nakobe Dean and Texas 4-star Marcel Brooks.

Edwards, who also holds offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Texas A&M, picked up his LSU offer on National Signing Day. He’s the eighth addition to the Tigers’ 2019 class.

LSU lands Easter commitment from OL Charles Turner

Quote
LSU’s 2019 recruiting class continues to build from the inside out.

The Tigers received a big commitment from 2019 offensive lineman Charles Turner on Easter Sunday evening.

Turner, a 3-star prospect from IMG Academy (Fla.) in Florida, is the No. 6-ranked center in the country and the third offensive lineman in LSU’s 2019 recruiting class. Overall, he’s No. 65-ranked prospect from the Sunshine State.

Turner attended LSU’s junior day in March, making the decision to join the class after recent visits to Florida, Kentucky and Michigan. He also holds offers from Auburn and Missouri, among others.

4-star QB Grant Gunnell sets up return visit to LSU

Quote
Gunnell, the nation’s No. 3-ranked pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2019, will be back in Baton Rouge on June 16 for the team’s passing and linemen camp. Members of the St. Pius X (Texas) High School 7-on-7 squad will make their way from Houston. Four-star wide receiver Jalen Curry will be making the trip, too.

Additionally, this sets up LSU with an added opportunity to get Gunnell on campus for an official visit before the 4-star quarterback gives a commitment. The Tigers remain in the 2019 All-American’s top group of schools along with Arizona, California and Oregon.

Gunnell is one of only nine 2019 quarterbacks with an offer from the Tigers.
