MSU Coaching Hire
« on: June 25, 2018, 07:26:43 pm »

Went with Chris Lemonis from Indiana over interim Coach Henderson. Did Henderson fail the try out, or did he not want it?

Henderson wanted it.  From what i read, the ad wanted someone totally unconnected to the coach that started the season

Get your team to be one win away from playing for the national title and get nothing to show for it. Shows you the questionable decision making of the athletic department down there yet again. I honestly thought he earned that job.

I guess I’ll be the one to go the other way here. Henderson is a fine coach, but not known as much of a recruiter or personality .

The guy they got can win a press conference, has a history of recruiting well, and has been to NCAAs more in 4 years at Indiana than Henderson ever did at UK.

MS state just got hot at right time this year and got extremely lucky. They had quite a few impact recruits that Canixarro brought in throughout the lineup, and they have signed a fantastic class. You need the talent to compete in the SEC and I think Lemonis will pull more in.

He also has not led a team past regional play.  Henderson has, as well as the Supers and one game away from the CWS finals.  Lemonis was at IU for 4 years and his record in year 4 was marginally better than his 3 previous seasons.  I'm not bad-mouthing the hire but it does seem like a strange one.

Lemonis took  over for Tracy Smith who was hired at Arizona St.  in his last two years at Indiana Smith went a combined 93-31 overall and 38-10 in B1G with back to back conference championships, making a college World Series and an NCAA regional.

In lemonis 4 years he never finished with more than 15 conference wins or better then a tie for 3rd in conference (with two 6th place and a 5th place finish.  He went to 3 regionals in 4 years and finished at .607 overall winning %, and just .591% in B1G.

He may be great, but his tenure at IU hasn’t proven that he is a great hire especially after the finish they just had

I'm pretty sure none of our fans would want Henderson if you actually took a look at his resume. I know I wouldn't want him here regardless of what he did this year. That MSU team was also a strike away from 2 and queue in the FSU regional. Now none of that is to say that the coach they hired is any better than Henderson. I don't know enough about him to know for sure. Word is that Henderson doesn't like recruiting and Cohen wanted a recruiter. Which Lemonis seems to be. That is a storied program and I don't blame them for not wanting a mediocre coach like Gary Henderson.

Seems the AD wants to make the program his, much like what happened to our track program here.  Maybe he had a really good reason to not hire Henderson, but I can't see it working well for them in the short term.

I do to.  He was the main recruiter for those Louisville teams which made at least a Super Regional from 2013 - 2017 before taking over in Indiana.

We saw the same thing with Vitello.  Look at how successful TCU was the last few years after he recruited the whole team and moved on to Arkansas.

And with a $600K salary, they can drop several hundred thousand for a pitching coach.

That may be so- but Dan McDonnell is one of the best coaches out there.  It’s hard to give credit to a coach 4 years after he left- especially in baseball.  Pretty sure there were quite a few “respected” posters on this board who told us about the doom and gloom of losing “ace” recruiter Butler.  We see how that is working out...

Because we replaced him with the best recruiter in the country in Vitello.  Sure, it takes good coaching to develop them, but bringing in studs helps out.

I'm cautious to see how Thompson does recruiting wise, but I think he will show he is elite in the next year or two.
