Ole Miss and Miss St.
« on: June 03, 2018, 01:59:12 pm »

Funny.

Starkville, Mississippi, home of Mississippi State University, is 104 miles southeast of Oxford. If you’ve never been to the state, it’s fair to say that the rivalry can be summed up by the usual tropes of the ag school (Mississippi State in Starkville) vs. the gilded liberal arts hub (Ole Miss in Oxford). Except these differences are played out in Mississippi’s extremes: At Ole Miss, you have the vanity and Antebellum fringe of magnolias and white columns. Starkville is more working class, hard, the Mississippi State campus surrounded by fiercely agrarian landscapes that create the kind of high lonesome feeling usually found in the American West.

In less literary terms: If you’re an Ole Miss fan, you’re probably an [CENSORED] lawyer in seersucker. If you’re a Mississippi State fan, you’re probably an [CENSORED] redneck in camouflage. Mississippi is a small place — the campuses are a two-hour drive apart — which means a lot of these folks know each other, too.

One is for normal Mississippians.  The other is for Mississippians who just think they're better than the others.

In the end, they're all still in Mississippi.

I should have never read that. It won't leave my head.

Ole Miss should have gotten the death penalty. The NCAA just told everyone to go ahead and cheat because this is the worst you're gonna get.

UoM sent a couple of young "Faith Hill look-a-likes" to Indiana so they could assist the committee to come up with a "fair and just" ruling...

absolutely.  But the names of the schools mentioned by rumors tells you all you need to know.  A&M, LSU, Mis state, Ole Miss and much more.  It got to deep too quick and they tried to redact it from the records and sweep it under the rug.  Tells you all you need to know about where the interest of the NCAA really is.

Summation of OM alum is correct. MSU not so much. They are the accountants, the farmers, the engineers, the teachers, the architects.  MSU people much more down to earth, and welcoming but don't confuse that for ignorant, classless or trashy.

OM has a much higher percentage of T-shirt fans who cling to Colonel reb, the confederate flag etc but who actual OM alum look down on in disdain.

I spent the first 10 years after college in MS. Worked with both OM and MSU folks. Lived in Starkville and even though I was from Ark and graduated from UA never felt anything but love and kinship from the people there.

There is actually a decent contingent of OM and MSU folks now living in NWA and I can say character traits for both groups hold true here as well.

So are you.  Being a realist makes me a whiner.  We were not good under Fatty Bulimia, hopefully we will be better in the future.
