'It's a hard decision': New early signing period creates uncertainty for football prospects

Quote
Austin running back Asa Martin plans to sign with Auburn this week, knowing he will participate in the Tigers' on-campus bowl practices before enrolling in January.

Uncommitted Sidney Lanier quarterback James Foster likely won't sign until February as Texas A&M and Alabama have shown renewed interest since his 2017 season ended.

That's just two storylines as Alabama's class of 2018 navigates the run-up to the NCAA's first early signing period -- set for Dec. 20-22 -- for football players.

"I think it's a hard decision, especially for the guys trying to decide about the early signing period," Martin said. "Say you sign and then the coach leaves?"

Nearly half of the SEC has gone through a head coaching change in the last month, with Arkansas, Texas A&M, Florida, Mississippi State and Tennessee changing coaches. Ole Miss elevated interim coach Matt Luke to the permanent role, but the NCAA then hit the Rebels with sanctions.

It's unclear how many players will take advantage of the early signing period, or even if schools truly want committed players to sign before Christmas. The traditional National Signing Day is still set for the first Wednesday of February.

Assistant coaches, of course, play a significant role in recruiting, and volatility in head-coaching ranks impacts them, too. Assistants move to another school to become a coordinator or schools offer a higher salary to jump from a rival school.

That's the business side of the college football, and it's why many prospects are taking a wait-and-see attitude about next week's early signing period because they just don't know who's moving where or when.

"I know for a fact that wherever you go in the country, there's no guarantee that the coach who is there when you get there is going to be there when you graduate in four years," said uncommitted Lee-Montgomery defensive back Kevontae Ruggs, the younger brother of Alabama receiver Henry Ruggs.

Then, there's the chance that a school will offer a player in the 11th-hour leading up to Dec. 20, with the acknowledgment that the offer might not be there in February.

Just because a prospect commits to a school doesn't mean others quit recruiting. In some cases, a committed prospect's recruitment intensifies in the day's leading up to National Signing Day because schools understand the public-relations victory of flipping a rival's commitment.

New Arkansas coach Chad Morris made a splash on the Birmingham recruiting scene Thursday.

Arkansas offered scholarships to five Hewitt-Trussville players -- quarterback Paul Tyson, offensive lineman Pierce Quick, defensive back Myles Mason, defensive back Malachi Moore and receiver Dazalin Worsham.

Hewitt-Trussville coach Josh Floyd is an Arkansas native who played quarterback for current Auburn coach Gus Malzahn in high school. He also coached in Arkansas before arrived at Hewitt-Trussville in 2014.[

Tyson, the great-grandson of legendary Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and an uncommitted prospect, threw for 3,392 yards and 36 touchdowns in 2017 while leading the Huskeis to an 11-1 record.

Quick, a junior, has already committed to Alabama, and Mason, a senior who transferred from Pleasant Grove last summer, has committed to Mississippi State.

Arkansas is the first SEC school to offer Moore, a sophomore who's seen as a locker-down corner in the future. Worsham caught nine touchdowns in 2017. Moore and Worsham are uncommitted./quote]

3 things you should know from Mississippi's rout of Alabama http://on.thec-l.com/2otuY95

Quote
It was no secret Alabama was the favorite to beat Mississippi in the 31st annual MS/AL All-Star Game. The talk on the sideline leading up to kickoff was hopeful that the guys from Mississippi would just be able to hang in the game with Alabama.

They did more than that. Mississippi beat Alabama for the second time in three years on Saturday afternoon at M.M. Roberts Stadium, 42-7.

It was just the second time in the series history that the game was played in Mississippi. Mississippi has won both times playing at home.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron makes unique promise to 4-star QB recruit

Quote
ORLANDO — While 4-star Houston (Texas) quarterback Grant Gunnell is currently a Texas A&M commitment, that hasn’t stopped LSU.

And, should the Tigers flip the talented 2019 quarterback from the Aggies, LSU coach Ed Orgeron made a unique promise to Gunnell.

“He said if I commit, he’ll bring the tiger down to my signing day,” Gunnell said, with a chuckle.

The tiger, of course, is Mike the VIII
