Sammy Khan, Jr: Jimbo Fisher says QBs Nick Starkel and Kellen Mond are 'dead even'

Quote
Sophomores Nick Starkel and Kellen Mond, who each started multiple games last season, enter the preseason on the same plane, according to Fisher.

"It's a dead-even race," Fisher said after Thursday's practice. "They started with the same offense, a new offense that neither one of them have ever seen before. Both guys have started [roughly] the same number of games. ... I think both guys are very good players."

What Georgia coach Kirby Smart is doing to avoid the type of quarterback controversy they're having at Alabama. ...

Quote
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia football coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney have made it abundantly clear this fall that the Bulldogs’ quarterback position is wide open.

“You don’t rule anything out,” Chaney surmised on Saturday, pointing out it will ultimately be Smart’s decision when asked about the potential for both quarterbacks to play regularly in each game.

Most recently, Alabama’s 2016 SEC Offensive Player of the Year, Jalen Hurts, rocked the boat in Tuscaloosa with comments that paint Nick Saban’s player management style in less than a positive light.

Georgia’s situation with Fromm and talented freshman Justin Fields doesn’t appear to be headed down that road.

The Bulldogs clubhouse sounds and appears to be in healthy working order this fall.

Coaches and players have discussed Georgia’s most recent high-profile quarterback competition candidly, complimentary of both players and confident the coaching staff will make a decision in the best interest of the team.

Why even a QB guru like A&M's Jimbo Fisher finds it hard to get the right fit at game's most critical position

Quote
"You're always trying to evaluate and find the right guys to be in your program," Fisher said after Thursday's practice.

Of the five quarterbacks Fisher signed at Florida State from 2013 to 2016, three transferred and one was dismissed for hitting a woman in a bar. One of them left this February, after Fisher already agreed to a $75 million deal at A&M.

The only one who stayed, junior Deondre Francois, suffered a season-ending injury in the '17 opener against Alabama. The injury forced Fisher to play a James Blackman, a true freshman, the rest of the year.

When Fisher was asked Thursday why Henry hasn't been signed by a four-year school after a season in JUCO, Fisher said he didn't know.

"I've never seen film of him since, so I have no idea," Fisher said. "I couldn't say. But he was a good player out of high school."

Fisher's skill of developing quarterbacks was one of the several attributes cited when Fisher left Florida State for A&M last December. From guys such as former Colleyville Heritage standout Christian Ponder to eventual Heisman winner Jameis Winston, Fisher has been praised for his ability to groom players at the game's most important position.

Netflix's "Last Chance U," which is currently airing its third season, has featured a former Florida State quarterback in every season.

This is the year of the quarterback in Alabama.

For just the second time in the history of college football in this state, starting quarterbacks return for Alabama and Auburn following 10-win seasons for both schools.

Quote
What sets this preseason of intrigue apart from the rest is the quarterback controversy at Alabama following a national championship, the potential for greatness at Auburn and...

At Alabama, Jalen Hurts returns after starting as a freshman and sophomore, but he could lose the starting job to backup Tua Tagovailoa, the hero of the national championship. Having both Hurts and Tagovailoa gives Alabama some offensive options (and security) unprecedented for the position during Nick Saban's run.

At Auburn, quarterback Jarrett Stidham returns for his second season after throwing for 3,158 yards in 2017. A 3,000-yard passer has never returned for an encore at Auburn. In fact, Stidham already is just the second Auburn quarterback to throw for over 3,000 yards in a season. Dameyune Craig holds the record (3,277 yards), but he did that his senior year.

Three quarterbacks, two schools, one goal: win the national championship.

Alabama needed both of its quarterbacks to get the job done last season, and the way it happened set the stage for this preseason's great anticipation. The last play of the previous season has been a preamble for the next.

That's what made this offseason so unlike any other for the Crimson Tide.

Controversy?

Do the Gamecocks have a decision to make at quarterback?

Quote
Jake Bentley, Will Muschamp said, could have played but he didn’t feel good letting him with his knee braced. Michael Scarnecchia certainly played very well and did nothing to lose the job.

Something to think about is the looming bye week, which is on after next week vs. Texas A&M. Keep Bentley out another week and get the benefit of another full week to rest that knee.

Either way, USC seems to have two capable QBs going forward.

Lindsey shoots down any talk of change at quarterback, 'committed' to Jarrett Stidham

Quote
"Jarrett's our guy," Lindsey said Sunday. "So, like I said, we are committed to him and really no other thoughts about that."

Stidham, who is one of the few quarterbacks to return for a second season as a starter under Gus Malzahn, has regressed in his redshirt junior season after opting to forego a chance at last spring's NFL Draft for another opportunity to compete for a title at Auburn.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder who became the second quarterback in program history to eclipse 3,000 passing yards in a single season, has struggled midway through the 2018 campaign as Auburn's offense has approached new lows in the Malzahn era. After completing 66.5 percent of his passes last season and being one of the best deep-ball passers in the country, Stidham has completed just 101-of-168 passes (60.1 percent) for 1,177 yards, five touchdowns and a pair of interceptions in six games this year.

Stidham is coming off his most inconsistent game of the season in Auburn's 23-9 loss to Mississippi State on Saturday in Starkville...
