Thinking about making the trip up there and just wondering what are some good hotels and places to eat there

With it being so late everything downtown is probably booked.  Try the Irmo/Harbison area.   Anything on Harbison Blvd, Lake Murray Blvd, or Columbiana Avenue would be good.

Stay away from the Two Notch Road area.

Am going to a HS playoff game tomorrow in West Memphis. Someone told me I-40 has construction east of Little Rock, slowing traffic. Is the jam bad enough to look for detours? I will traveling in mid-late afternoon Friday. I appreciate any help.

Take the Brinkley exit. Then turn south and go down and hit Hwy. 70 to west Memphis. Hwy. 70 runs parallel to I-40.

I have gone through there with no problem.  I would leave home a little earlier than normal, there are slow downs and sight-seers.

Incorrect.  If he's going toward West Memphis, you're detouring him AFTER the construction.  I live in Memphis and come to central Arkansas 2-3 times a month, so I drive it constantly.

On the way to West Memphis, if you detour, get off at Carlisle and get back on at either Biscoe (the first opportunity after you cross White River), or, if a cop is posted there and won't let you because they're working in that area, Brinkley.

On the way back home, off at Brinkley and back on at Hazen.  U.S. 70 does run parallel to I-40 so it's not that inconvenient except that it's 2-lane the whole way.

I've found that the back-ups on I-40 around White River tend to pop up later in the day for some reason.  In other words, if you're traveling early morning, chances are you won't have a delay so it may be worth staying on the interstate.

He better exit I-40 long before he gets to the Brinkley exit. The road construction starts slowing down traffic about 40-45 miles east of Little Rock and is mainly centered around the DeValls Bluff area. If he waits until Brinkley to get off I-40 he is already pretty much past the construction area. I would suggest taking the Lonoke or Carlisle exits to find highway 70 and follow that to Brinkley and then get back on I-40 at that point.

Btw, if you do take highway 70 to go through DeValls Bluff, going east you will find a GREAT little joint called Craigs BarBQ there in Devalls Bluff on your right hand side. That place has been there forever and makes great BarBQ.

Bingo.

Don't look at this as a detour, look at it as an excuse for some good BBQ and fried pie.

I agree with the Carlisle advice.  I live in that area and it is very unpredictable.  To be safe, get off at Carlisle and get back on in Brinkley.  Watch out for Ivory Billed Woodpeckers.

If your not too terribly in a hurry you can get on Hwy 70 there in LR off of 440, Scott exit I think, and drive 70 to Brinkley.

EXIT 193 (DeValls Bluff)for detour TO West Memphis is the exit you need to take for the detour. The road construction begins soon after this exit. You can check the traffic flow at this exit - if it is moving then STAY ON 40 East.

The detour is clearly marked - you take Hwy 70 and get back on 40E at Biscoe

I drive this every week. Friday afternoon is pretty heavy traffice.

Check this site on your smart phone before you get to exit 193 headed East
http://roadnow.com/i40/I-40-Arkansas-Traffic-5.html
If there are red areas exit and take 70 to Biscoe or Brinkley depending on where backup ends. Yellow or green your choice but my experience has been they're not too bad and can depend on how long of a distance shows yellow.Typically very accurate

i came over from LR to work in Memphis this week.  i got off the Interstate at the Hazen exit and drove highway 70 to Brinkley then got back on I40.  according to the GPS, it only slowed me down about 5 minutes.  i think the GPS takes into account the slowdown for the road construction.

That BarBQ place in Marianna is on the south side of downtown and has VERY limited hours. He only stays open long enough each day to sell what he has made for that day alone. As an aside, he does not sell side orders so if you are the type that likes fries with your BarBQ you are out of luck there. He only sells the bags of chips. He also sells his BarBQ on plain white bread so if you want yours on a bun you can forget that too.

Take 70 from hazen to brinkley or visa versa if heading west.  I make frequent trips back to beebe from memphis and while yes sometimes you can get through with no problems, i quit risking it the day i sat in traffic for 4 hours.

This is accurate...I get up early on Saturday mornings just to try to get up there by 10:00 and sometimes then he is already closed.

He and Shemwell's in Cairo, Illinois are the only two places that I know of that use white bread instead of buns.

Am going to a HS playoff game tomorrow in West Memphis. Someone told me I-40 has construction east of Little Rock, slowing traffic. Is the jam bad enough to look for detours? I will traveling in mid-late afternoon Friday. I appreciate any help.

I've had to make that drive many times over the past six months.

As others have said, you may want to get off I 40 at Carlisle and get back on at Brinkley to avoid the road work.

But I will say that I've just been staying on I-40 the last few times I've made the trip. It's nowhere near as bad as it was earlier in the year. It's sort of a gamble whether to get on or stay off.

Apologies from the board, there has been some mis-information posted.  The only place you should stop for BBQ while on detour is Craigs in DVB.  Ignore the rest of the chatter.

Even if the interestate was fine, you should make the detour.

If you go to DVB, hit the Pie Shoppe across the highway.  Great homemade pies.

As for Jones BBQ in Marianna, get it by 11am or it's all gone.  And don't forget the sauce.
