The Cate Brothers
Huey Lewis
Played there

Saw Jason and the Scorchers play there on a wickedly cold night instead of watching an OT NCAA Final Four Championship game (Glen Rice led Michigan over Seton Hall). They kept blowing a breaker. Talked to Jason quite a bit waiting for it to be fixed. Turns out he likes Bob Wills almost as much as I do. Who knew?

It was.

They closed, as my grandfather says, from the landlord not wanting to make upgrades to the facilities. The landlord is a government agency that runs a rehabilitation center in an old motel next door. So the owner just closed up shop instead.

There were Kelly's in Wynne, Batesville, Bald Knob, and one other place that escapes me. The guy that founded them is gone now, and he built one for each of his children.

They were an Arkansas-built, small business. They leased the one in Bald Knob to that Chinese guy from the commercials. Hilarious. He said he was a good-ol boy, with good down home cooking.

I lol'd

FWIW it reopened in the old Duck Blind in the Ramada.

The "Rink" wasn't an eating establishment, but was a very popular drinking/event/concert place in the 70's and early 80's......   The stories that place could tell if it was still around......

Especially in the parking lot………………….

Several people, from my hometown, were driving to our high school football game in Mena and stopped at that place to eat. Unfortunately, they got food poisoning. That was many years ago though.

There used to be a pretty famous family owned place just south of Pine Bluff on the highway toward Monticello.  I can't think of the name of it for the life of me, but it was family owned and an institution in those parts.  If anyone remembers the name from that description and also knows if it's still open, it's worth a meal or two.  Sorry my memory is so bad on the name.

Baton Rouge Smoking
« Reply #17642 on: March 18, 2016, 10:30:34 am »

https://twitter.com/theadvocatebr/status/710826275519143936

Quote
An ordinance that would ban smoking in Baton Rouge’s casinos and bars is finally headed to the East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council after a campaign launched in late January.

The Metro Council should vote on the ordinance in April, and it already has five of the seven votes it will need to pass from council members who are sponsoring it.

While smoking is already banned by Louisiana law in places of employment and public venues, the local proposal is designed to “close the gap that state law left,” said Stasha Rhodes, manager for the Smoke-Free Baton Rouge campaign. For example, while most universities and colleges already have prohibited smoking on campus, ones that haven’t in Baton Rouge would be included in the ban if it is passed.

The term “smoking” would encompass more than just cigarettes. Also prohibited under the law would be cigars, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, pipes, hookah, marijuana and any other lighted or heated product made from tobacco or plants that is meant to be inhaled, regardless of whether it’s natural or synthetic.

The ordinance would mean that Baton Rouge’s casinos would have to stop allowing people to smoke while they play —

It was a landmark, that's for sure.  One of the first salad bars I can remember that included boiled shrimp you could put on your salad.  I often filled up on that before my steak came.

True story:  One of my old college roommates at UCA was a North Little Rock guy who had worked in high school and college as a waiter at Sir Loin's.  We all knew he did well; he just had that type of personality and back then Sir Loin's was one of the few "high dollar" restaurants in the area so tips were very good.  He never told us how much he made, but when he graduated from college and began interviewing for marketing positions (his major) with good companies, he turned down the first 5-6 jobs because his salary wasn't going to be close to what he was making as a waiter at Sir Loin's.
