Ah...now the truth comes out.

Their restaurants SUCK.

Yep, they are not even close to the Doe's in the rock.

What is so good about Doe's then? That you have to find multiple people who want their oversized, underflavored hunk of crap cooked the same way?
I didn't say that Doe's was the best steak on Earth, but to compare it to Golden Corral is just plain ignorant. They all pale in comparison to a Del Frisco's Prime Ribeye with Shanghai style Fried Calmari to start. Gotta go to Dallas for that though.

That one sucks, too. The one in Fayetteville sucks.

I'll reserve judgment on the original in Greenville, MS, since it has a James Beard award.

Yeah, I'll definitely give you that, althought I've never had a Golden Corral steak. I've just never liked the food at any of the three Doe's I've been to, and it seems like most people gush over the place. It's okay, at best.

I need to.

Best I've had in Arkansas was either at Ashley's or Ferneau.  I LOVE Ferneau's place.  Haven't been there since they renamed it, though.

ONe place that I have not seen mentioned is Green House Grill in Fayetteville.
Really good and not ordinary.
Also those that can remember the day's of ROTC and The Grill.  They are open again in the old Hush Puppy restaurant on 112.  Just past the drive in movie theatre.

Take the lady friend to Arthur's in LR.

Arthur's has a nice bone-in Chicago ribeye that is just as good (if not better) than their Australian Wagyu options.
Every once in a while they get some really choice filets "The Greg Norman 9."  They're solid, but they're $125.
They're not doing Japanese Wagyu right now, allegedly due to the Fukushima Daiichi reactor leak.

I spit on their reactor leak.  If I want a Godzilla steak, then I want a Godzilla steak. I've eaten these mothers abroad and I've yet to have anything glow.

Yeah, I'm too broke for the Kobe. $35/oz is too rich for my blood.

Is the Chicago ribeye dry-aged? That's the key.

It's about the same.  They rednecked out the decorations and there is a new emphasis on like "Coupon night" and buy one get one free or some crap but many of the favorites are still around.
Some of the cheesy ideas in place at their (awful) steak place in the North Little Rock motel carried over and don't jive with fine dining. Have you been to the Riverfront Steak house?  Reminds me of Cedar Rapids. Every visiting convention drone is clutching their free drink coupon and jostling to make sure they're seated fast enough for the special pricing hour on the 4000 item buffet.  "NOW WITH MINI SHRIMP!"

The car guy probably should have just let Donnie do his thing and not plastered Blue Dog paintings and fish tanks everywhere.

Ferneau's used to be great.  We don't go any more.

Anyone trying to pass anything off as Kobe before just a couple months ago was ripping people off. Even now, I'd wager 99% of the restaurants advertising Kobe beef on their menu are still ripping people off.

Steaks - Mr. B's wins, hands down.  Everywhere else is overrated.
Italian - Pesto Cafe
Burger (No nonsense) - Feltner Brothers
Burger (Atmosphere) - Hugo's
BBQ - NWA is hurtin' pretty bad for decent BBQ...Whole Hog is WAY overrated in my opinion.  I'd go with B&B BBQ.
Pizza - Dam Goode Pies or Gusano's
Bar/Wings - Foghorn's (the one by Baum is my preference)
Breakfast - Susan's in Springdale
Mexican - Ugh...none of them are that great.
Home Cooking/Cafe - Neal's
Cajun - Lin D's Cajun Gypsy

yes.

I haven't been to Arthur's since way before the reactor incident. Jerry B (the owner) wouldn't rip people off that way. He owns several restaurants and has a rep to maintain.

My wife and I think that Arthur's is the best place in LR.  We live just down the road and would go there more often, but common sense says do not pay $50 for a steak as often as I crave one.

Fayetteville area:

best bar food: Ferrells; I recommend a TJ dog, hangover burger, mac n cheese.
best upscale Italian: Bordinos; boar suasage pasta is money! they win awards every year and their new brunch on satuday rocks!
best authentic pizza: geraldis; everything is awesome! those boys are from yonkers,NY!
best bakery/breakfast: little bread company: everything is made from scratch, like mom!
best BBQ: penguin eds

let me know if you have any questions.

Doe's serves sides of boiled new potatoes in buter (original!) and marinated salad of ice burg (ruined!).  Their tamales are shipped in from Greenville or somewhere, and then they make a basic, greasy chili.  That and an enormous, underseasoned (but aged pretty decent, not great) steak are what you have to look forward to.  And being about a hundred lighter in the pocket for you and your lady friend.

Go get a steak at Aquafire -- or get their wild boar or buffalo or scallops.  Go to Vetro 1924 and get their Osso Bucco.  Myriad places for better spent money.  Doe's lives off the legendary Little Rock/Greenville locations' reputations.  It is a restaurant for meat-and-potatoes fellows with no refined taste or idea what good food is.

I read that article on kobe and he's absolutely correct.  Restaurants have been gouging people for awhile now on their "kobe" beef, because they're allowed to call it that even though it isn't.  It may be American Wagyu, but it wasn't kobe.

That guy just wrote a follow up article about how now that kobe is legal for import, it'll be even easier for restaurants to pass of imitation kobe beef because there's no ban on it.

If you have a restaurant advertising kobe beef, ask them to show you proof that its legit. They will have a certificate of authenticity if its the real deal.

Lived there for 2 years....hotels off of Garners Ferry Road are out of the major college scene traffic, short ride to the stadium (you would travel down 77 and right on Shop road - about 10-15 minutes.) Was a good bbq spot off of bluff or shop road a year or so ago...will get with my son on the name of it. Was a buffet style place that does nothing but bbq. Also, Pawleys Front Porch was always a favorite of the wife and I.

Be careful of their tea also. Many places bring it sweet if you just order "tea". Never forget my first one in the Carolina's. As usual, I put a couple of Sweet'n Lows in the glass and then nearly spewed it all over my boss across the table with that first drink.

A second vote for Pawley's front porch - must have burgers for game day.

We stay at Courtyard Columbia Downtown on Assembly.  Prices have gone up over the years, but it's walking distance to the stadium.  We go to Hunter Gatherer Brewery on Friday night for dinner which is an excellent brew-pub.  Then for brunch on Sunday, DiPrato's.  There's a wait there, and at Pawley's, but they're both worth it.

Carolina BBQ sauce is gonna have a mustard base, if you dont like that dont try it.

Technically not accurate.

'Carolina BBQ' is NORTH Carolina sauce. Vinegar based. Thin as water, sweetened with brown sugar. Spiced with 'smoke' and red pepper. Also known as 'Lexington BBQ' because it supposedly originate in Lexington, NC (which isn't true either)

The yellow mustard based sauce is 'low country' (they mean that kindly) from lower S. Car & upper Georgia (particularly Savannah).

Some restaurants (in S. Car) serve both so you can compare.

I'm not a fan of low country cuisine...period. But the vinegar based Carolina is decent. 'Course, I grew up in Little Rock, where BBQ was tex/mex ketchup based. Which is actually not easy to find in the Carolinas.

On a side note, it's impossible to find a decent doughnut in the Carolinas, once you've been spoiled by Shipleys.

If you get to the stadium early, there's usually ample parking in the park right next to the stadium. For some reason, Gamecock fans rarely fill it up, preferring to fill in the side streets in spots they've used for years.

They're ALWAYS friendly and outgoing. Never had a bad experience there. But the nosebleed seats are elevated so high, they're above airport landing patterns, so get lower seats.

Tickets are always available from sidewalk salesmen (scalpers). That might have been different this year if their wheels hadn't come off, but there won't be capacity there THIS year for sure.

Prayers for Marcus L.
