1. NBA TAKING WAIT-AND-SEE APPROACH ON 2017

Following the much-hyped class of 2016, NBA scouts expected that it would be tough for the class of 2o17 to match their predecessors. That being said, the NBA was hoping for a little more than they've seen out of 2017 over the past three weeks.

"It's not like it was last year obviously," one scout told Rivals.com. "This round of All-Star games hasn't been the best setting for a lot of these guys and there aren't as many no-brainers as we have seen in other classes."

However, one player did stand out the most to NBA scouts. The only player to receive votes in our polling of NBA scouts as the best overall prospect was 2017's No. 1 ranked player, Missouri-bound small forward Michael Porter Jr.

"Porter sometimes leaves you wanting a little more, but he's pretty clearly the best player in the class," said one Eastern Conference scout. "He has terrific size, he's athletic, he has great skill and he is the one guy that could give all of the 2016 kids a run for their money."

2. BAMBA, AYTON IMPRESS

After Porter Jr., NBA scouts seemed to be the most enamored with Rivals.com's No. 2 and No. 3 ranked players Mohamed Bamba and DeAndre Ayton. It was a pretty even split between the two with the Arizona-bound Ayton making a comeback and having the NBA guys warm up to him at the Jordan Brand Classic...

Those who like the undecided Bamba more point to his length and ability to be a game changer on the defensive end.

"His arms are so long that I wonder if it is even possible for him to shoot a normal jump shot but I don't really care," said one scout at the McDonald's All-American Game. "In our league we'll be drafting him to protect the rim and rebound. His length is a game-changer and he's also pretty coordinated. He looks like a kid that would be fun to work with."

If you enjoyed the presence of Mark Gottfried, Terrance Ferguson and Bruce Pearl on draft night, just wait. It's a good bet the 2018 NBA Draft will have an even greater Heart of Dixie flavor.

More than it's had in years.

A glance at a few crazy early mock drafts for 2018 shows as many as five players with state connections already on the radar...

Alabama freshman point guard phenom Collin Sexton is a favorite to be a one-and-done top-10 selection... DraftExpress.com lists him at No. 8. Sexton will be Alabama's first pick since Richard Hendrix went in the second round in 2008. If he goes in the first 30 picks, Sexton will be Alabama's first choice in the first round since Gerald Wallace in 2001. Sexton also has a shot to be Alabama's first top-10 pick since Antonio McDyess went No. 2 overall in 1995.

DraftExpress.com lists junior power forward Donta Hall as a second-round pick at No. 41.

Auburn also has not one but two players on its roster getting early mention as possible 2018 draftees. CBSsports.com predicts sophomore swingman Mustapha Heron as the No. 20 pick and sophomore center Austin Wiley as the No. 25 pick.

If either Heron or Wiley is drafted, he'll be the first Auburn player to hear his name called since point guard Jamison Brewer in 2001. If Heron or Wiley goes in the first round, he'll be the program's first first-rounder since center Mamadou N'diaye in 2000.

That also was the last time two Auburn players were selected in the same draft. Chris Porter went in the second round in 2000.

I’d say Hamidou Diallo and Kevin Knox are the only near-locks to leave for the NBA after this season. They had the most buzz before the season and they’ve delivered so far. Nick Richards makes a lot of mock drafts, because he’s super athletic at 7-foot with a 7-5 wingspan, but he doesn’t look anything like a pro right now —

It's early in the season, but here are 5 college players that I think are improving their future Draft stock | Story on @247Sports: https://247sports.com/college/duke/Article/NBA-Draft-2018-College-players-with-rising-stock-at-early-juncture-of-season-111461540 …

Quote
Jalen Hudson, Florida

Florida has been a hot topic early in the season with wins over top 20 ranked Gonzaga, Stanford and an impressive effort against Duke. Among the reasons the Gators look so good has been the play of 6-foot-6 wing Jalen Hudson. After sitting out last season due to a transfer from Virginia Tech, Hudson has emerged as one of the most productive and perhaps surprising players in the nation.

Through six games, Hudson is putting up 21.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest. The most staggering improvement lies in his shooting. In high school, Hudson was known as a non-shooter. His freshman year with the Hokies he shot 28.3-percent. Followed up with 34.6-percent his sophomore year. So far this season, he’s made 19 of 40 attempts and is shooting 47.5-percent from three. He’s also impressed from short and mid-range, going 6-for-12 from that area.

It’s still too early to project Hudson in the draft, but he’s certainly improved his stock as a prospect and after this electric start he’s certainly one to track.

18 NBA Mock Draft: Alabama's Collin Sexton finally jumps into top 5 (https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2018-nba-mock-draft-alabamas-collin-sexton-jumps-into-top-5-taken-by-suns)

Quote
Welcome to the top tier, Collin Sexton.

There was a conventional wisdom leading into this basketball season said there were five players who are currently playing at American colleges as well as overseas were worth tanking for. In some sort of order, these players were Arizona's DeAndre Ayton, Duke's Marvin Bagley, Missouri's Michael Porter Jr., Texas' Mo Bamba and the Slovenian star Luka Doncic, who is playing professionally for Real Madrid...

Alabama's Collin Sexton has been an absolute revelation in the first month of the season for Avery Johnson's team. Sexton is averaging 20.8 points, 3.5 assists and four rebounds. His most noteworthy game was a bizarre one, when he dropped 40 points on Minnesota the Saturday after Thanksgiving -- the final 19 points coming in the last 10 minutes of the game, when Alabama only had three players on the floor.

4. Porter, Jr.

5. Sexton

7, Knox, UK

10. Robert Wms III, A&M

15. Diallo

21. Vanderbilt, UK

26. Austin Wiley, AU  [sitting this one out]

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Enjoy Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for however long this NCAA Tournament run lasts, Kentucky fans, because when it’s over his college career almost certainly is, too.

That wasn’t really the plan, to join John Calipari’s long list of one-and-dones, but the 19-year-old Canadian and his “old-man game” have simply been too good.

“Everyone is looking for that first-round guarantee and he has at least that now,” said Mike Schmitz, NBA draft analyst for ESPN, after watching Gilgeous-Alexander in person for three days at the SEC Tournament. “It would surprise me if he’s at Kentucky next year.

“It wouldn’t completely shock me if he ends up being the best point guard to come out of this draft.”

Sexton is one of a few Alabama players who could test the NBA draft this spring.

Fellow freshman John Petty was asked in the locker room if he was planning on coming back for his sophomore season.

PJ Washington's dad can't see leaving Kentucky to be a second-round pick. He's currently ranked 46th (ESPN) and 60th (Sports Illustrated) among 2018 NBA Draft prospects — solidly in second-round range. And pinky injury means the combine is up in the air.

Quote
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky freshman Jarred Vanderbilt will fly home to Houston next week to meet with his family about whether to roll the dice on the 2018 NBA Draft or return to school and prove he can stay healthy for an entire season and do more than rebound.

“We haven’t decided yet,” Vanderbilt’s father Robert told SEC Country...

Vanderbilt, a 6-foot-9 former McDonald’s All-American, missed the Wildcats’ first 17 games with a left foot injury — he injured the same foot twice previously in high school — and sat out all six of UK’s postseason games with a left ankle injury. In between, he played 14 games and averaged 5.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 17 minutes off the bench.

He averaged 18.5 rebounds per 40 minutes and his rebound percentage (he grabbed an estimated 25.7 percent of available rebounds) would’ve led the nation had he played enough to qualify. But because of his injury history and a rough showing offensively at Kentucky (42.6 percent shooting), the guy who was once considered a potential lottery pick is now widely regarded as a fringe second-rounder.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Many of college basketball’s biggest stars already have declared for the 2018 NBA Draft, and the families of several Kentucky freshmen have at least weighed in on their ongoing decision process, but Hamidou Diallo and his camp have remained silent.

The assumption is that Diallo, who tested the waters a year ago and waited until the last possible moment to pull his name out of the 2017 draft, will turn pro after starting all 37 games for the Wildcats last season.
(https://pbs.twimg.com/card_img/981868791373221890/B9NUeg0l?format=jpg&name=600x314) (https://www.seccountry.com/kentucky/kentucky-hamidou-diallo-nba-draft-decision-can-taste-it-now)

Quote
ESPN ranks Diallo the 34th-best prospect available in this draft, while Sports Illustrated has him going 43rd overall in its latest mock draft. Both would put him in the second round and probably get him a ticket to the developmental G League with very little guaranteed money next season.

Missouri

Jontay Porter (6-11, Fr.) — Former 5-star recruit who reclassified and enrolled at Missouri a year early to play alongside his superstar brother (which barely happened, thanks to an injury to Michael Porter Jr.). He only started seven of 33 games as a freshman for the Tigers but averaged 9.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 blocks (and shot 36.4 percent from 3-point range). He could be a star next season at Mizzou, sure, but it might be wise to strike while interest in him is high and dissection of his flaws at a minimum. Ranked No. 36 draft-eligible prospect by ESPN. Our advice: Stay in the draft.

South Carolina basketball player Brian Bowen has been invited to participate in the NBA Draft Combine, according to SportsIllustrated’s Andy Staples.

Bowen, who began his college career at Louisville, recently declared for the draft, but has not hired an agent. The former 5-star recruit left Louisville after he was named in the FBI’s pay-for-play investigation last fall.

NCAA has yet to rule whether or not he will be eligible for the 2018-19 season, so his future at the college level is still an unknown, regardless of the feedback he receives from NBA brass.

On Friday, Bowen’s lawyer, Jason Setchen, confirmed the combine invite.

Most surprising

Arkansas' talented big man Daniel Gafford and Gonzaga's Rui Hachimura did not even test the process. Gafford, a 6-foot-11 freshman who averaged 11.8 points and 6.2 rebounds, would have likely been selected in the first round, maybe even in the lottery.

Ultimate wild card

Brian Bowen. There's a lot to unpack with Bowen, who likely won't know whether he will be cleared by the NCAA to play next season in time for the deadline. Bowen is a mystery to most NBA personnel, who haven't seen him play in more than a year. He's a likely second-rounder who might be able to play his way into the first round if he has a strong showing at the combine and in team workouts.

Most difficult call

Hamidou Diallo. On one hand, the Kentucky wing could use another season in college to improve his perimeter shot and his decision-making. On the other hand, there's a chance Diallo could get buried on the roster if he came back with a new set of talented freshmen coming in (Keldon Johnson, Tyler Herro). Diallo decided to sign with an agent, and it will be interesting to see whether he gets a guaranteed contract.

Declared and signed with agent

No-brainers

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, PG, Fr., Kentucky

Kevin Knox, PF, Fr., Kentucky

Michael Porter Jr., PF, Fr., Missouri

Collin Sexton, PG, Fr., Alabama

Robert Williams, PF, Soph., Texas A&M

Need another year

Hamidou Diallo, SG, Fr., Kentucky

Testing the waters

Players from major programs with tough calls to make

Austin Wiley, C, Fr., Auburn

Five of the six Kentucky players who declared for the NBA draft have been invited to the draft combine.

Maybe Wenyen Gabriel gets a later combine invite as an alternate. Otherwise, he’ll need to light up team workouts or be comfortable going undrafted, taking the long road. (Or just go back to school, as all NBA folks I’ve talked to would presently advise.)

A) A guaranteed contract

Quote
Jalen Hudson, Florida: This 6-6 wing made 78 three-point shots last season and is tailor made for today’s NBA thanks to his ability to extend any defense. Hudson doesn’t appear to be in the mix to be a first-round pick, but could still find a way to stick with a team because of his ability to make shots. If he returns to Florida, the Gators will have a potent perimeter with Hudson and KeVaughn Allen on the wings and freshman Andrew Nembhard at the point of attack.

Charles Matthews, Michigan [by way of Kentucky]: John Beilein is always going to have his team in contention for an NCAA berth regardless of his personnel, but losing Matthews would be a major blow to Michigan. Despite not being invited to the NBA Draft Combine, this Chicago native has still kept his options open for next season...

Admiral Schofield, Tennessee: The Vols are currently ranked sixth in the FRS Preseason Poll and Schofield is a major reason why. He emerged into a bonafide scorer last season and made 64 three-point shots as a junior after knocking down just 21 as a sophomore. His return ensures that Rick Barnes and Tennessee will again be in the mix for an SEC regular season title. Schofield was not invited to the NBA Draft Combine.

Jontay Porter, Missouri: For the Tigers to ensure relevancy in Cuonzo Martin’s second season in Columbia, they’ll need Porter back next to Jeremiah Tilmon up front. With Kassius Robertson, Jordan Barnett, and obviously Michael Porter Jr. no longer a part of Missouri’s program, Jontay Porter would become a featured piece to the puzzle in 18-19. The 6-11 lefty was invited to the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago and is generally thought to be in the mix to be a late first or early second-round pick.

Man I am so proud of the way @SilvaObame & @20tugs have represented themselves, their families & USC for the past 3 weeks. Numerous GM’s have called to express unbelievable interest in both & to complement them as players & rave about how great they interview. #MyDudes #Gamecocks

Chris Silva and Brian Bowen (who has not been cleared by NCAA to play for SC)

Bowen acquires agent and will stay in draft pool.

Kevin Knox's (@KevKnox) workout was definitely one of the more impressive ones we've seen thus far. Not hard to see why his stock seems to be rising in the pre-draft process. He could very well end up in the top ten. Interview included. (https://twitter.com/DraftExpress/status/1006657517596893184)

Cal: Losing 4 in row hurt draft position for UK players this year. "This is why winning matters."

... As I reported in Feb., Egbunu's complications in returning last February stemmed from cartilage issues from below his knee. It has only gotten worse, and possibly career threatening:

Chose not to petition for a sixth year, got a medical exam as part of the draft process, and if the report is valid he is missing a portion of cartilage.
