Trojans coach Clay Helton told reporters that the Class of 2016 signee — a 4-star offensive tackle recruit out of high school — is trying to join a school closer to home, according to Ryan Abraham of USCFootball.com. Helton also denied an Internet rumor that Price punched him in the face and was being dismissed from the program.

Price is a Lawrenceville, Ga., native who took official visits to Georgia, Auburn and LSU leading up to National Signing Day, and was predicted by many to sign with the Bulldogs. He also considered Tennessee among his favorites at one point.

Price was ranked the No. 9 offensive tackle in his class...

Scarblog: Blake Barnett leaving Alabama was only a matter of time (http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/index.ssf/2016/09/blake_barnett_leaving_alabama.html)

(https://o.twimg.com/2/proxy.jpg?t=HBhdaHR0cDovL2ltYWdlLmFsLmNvbS9ob21lL2JhbWEtbWVkaWEvd2lkdGg2MjAvaW1nL2FscGhvdG9zL3Bob3RvLzIwMTYvMDkvMjQvMjExNzc5MDItbGFyZ2UuanBnFPgFFIwDHBSEBhSUAwAAFgASAA&s=AMUsddFIm7qMW8fMKD9JJcztNDXCcQy60gR5fw1JX4Y)

Quarterbacks want to play quarterback. They don't want to mop up in games already decided. They don't want to wear baseball caps and hold up funny signs or flash signals to other quarterbacks.

With rare exceptions like Auburn vs. Clemson, only one of them can play at a time, and only one of them can be the man, and it's only a matter of time until the men behind the man look for another place to be the man themselves.

Looks like that time for Blake Barnett is now.

AL.com's Matt Zenitz reports that Barnett has left the Alabama football team with the intention to transfer to another school.

The timing may be surprising, but the decision isn't.

Barnett started the opener against USC, but when Jalen Hurts took over on the third series and didn't sit again until the game was in hand, it became obvious that Hurts was going to be Alabama's starting quarterback.

Hurts assumed that position in the second game against Western Kentucky and did nothing but solidify it in that win and victories over Ole Miss and Kent State. Barnett was relegated to second string, getting no snaps until the Western Kentucky and Kent State games were decided and none at all against Ole Miss.

Hurts is a true freshman, which means there's a good chance he'll be Alabama's starting quarterback for the next three or four years. Barnett is a redshirt freshman, and there was no way he was going to spend the rest of his college career as a backup.

All quarterbacks want to play, but Barnett isn't just any quarterback. He was a consensus five-star recruit from California who was named MVP of the 2014 Elite 11 Quarterback Competition, the No. 1 pocket passer in his class [mayber ever] by ESPN.com and the No. 1 dual-threat QB by Rivals.com.

Punch in the gut to those coaches who wait until fall classes start to name their starter.

If Barnett's best case scenario unfolds, it could be a game-changer in college football — particularly at the quarterback position. We regularly see college coaches delay naming a starting quarterback in open competitions until the first game of the season. Sometimes the competition extends well into the season. That can be a tool used to limit the flexibility and motivation for a quarterback to transfer out.

Barnett is presenting a scenario that gives quarterbacks a counter, the opportunity to transfer to a different school and preserve eligibility even after the season has kicked off. (http://247sports.com/Article/Alabama-QB-Blake-Barnett-has-more-options-than-you-think-as-a-tr-47861580)

Quote
The source who thinks Barnett might have all of 2017 available muses that by leaving Alabama now and arriving at a two-year institution with a mid-term date in mid-October, Barnett would be essentially wiping clean the fall of 2016 at Alabama from his academic record. Consequently, his midterm transfer to a two-year institution would allow him to retroactively start the clock to the beginning of the first semester, thus allowing him to be eligible for the 2017 season with three years remaining to fulfill three years of eligibility.

Two months ago, it was announced that inside linebacker Tim Kimbrough, who started seven games last year, was transferring from Georgia.

He revealed on his Twitter and Instagram accounts on Thursday that he has decided to enter the 2017 NFL draft. (https://www.dawgnation.com/football/former-georgia-linebacker-tim-kimbrough-announces-future-plans)

Quote
“I’ve been thinking very hard about what I should do best for my future and I have came to a final conclusion on what I have decided,” Kimbrough wrote on Instagram. “I would like to announce that I have decided to declare for the 2017 NFL Draft.”

Kimbrough was Georgia’s leading returning tackler from last season, when he had 67 tackles, 5.5 for a loss, and one sack. But after being suspended for the TaxSlayer Bowl for unspecified reasons, then returning to the team with a clean slate, he fell behind Natrez Patrick and then Roquan Smith in the pecking order.

Johnathan Abram left the SEC last winter, and it’s look like he will be making a return trip.

The former Georgia safety transferred from the Bulldogs shortly after coach Kirby Smart was hired in January.

Mississippi native ended up transferring to Jones County Junior College (https://www.seccountry.com/sec/report-former-georgia-safety-considering-transfer-to-4-sec-schools)

McElroy was highly critical of Hurd and compared the move to that of Blake Barnett, who decided to transfer out of Alabama in the middle of the season.

McElroy would go on to call Hurd selfish and a quitter.

To walk out at this time of the season is ridiculous and he’s always going to be he’s forever going to be remember as a quitter when times got tough.

McElroy added that if Tennessee had a better record Hurd would still be on the team.

The former Alabama quarterback also brought up that Hurd seems to be all about the NFL. And while a move like this could get him more reps at another position, he will now have a giant red flag next to his name.

“I can tell you thing, when he’s being evaluated by NFL Draft evaluators and front office personnel, there will be a massive red flag next to his name, knowing that when his team lost three in a row, he decided to walk out on his team. What does that tell you about his competitive spirit,” McElroy said.

McElroy is an analyst for the SEC Network.

He is currently doing game analysis including other conferences

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Jalen Hurd’s name was never uttered, but Tennessee coach Butch Jones commented on the recent uptick of midseason transfers during the SEC Teleconference on Wednesday.

The Volunteers have lost a pair of former 5-star recruits in the last three weeks, as receiver Preston Williams left the team on Oct. 13 and then the Hurd — on pace to become the school’s all-time leading rusher — abruptly left the team Monday morning.

“I think every young man has their own reasoning why,” Jones said on kids leaving during a season.

“There’s a difference behind it. You can never devalue the team concept with everything that goes into it. I do think it’s becoming more prominent though. But every young every young man [sic] has their reason leaving a program.”

Zach’s Mail Stack: Which transfer QB does Florida have a chance with?

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/zachs-mail-stack-transfer-qb-florida-chance

Quote
With Luke Del Rio’s struggles this season and the uncertainty surrounding true freshmen Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask, the quarterback position will once again be a question mark in 2017.

The Gators are in the mix for three quarterbacks: junior college players Blake Barnett (Alabama) and Jarrett Stidham (Baylor) and graduate transfer Malik Zaire. Of the three, UF has the best chance with Zaire.

Barnett and Stidham have had several schools after them for a while, and Florida is a little late to the party. One of them would need to officially visit this month for that to change.

Zaire, however, just announced his intentions to transfer this week and lists Florida as one of his favorites. He did not win the Irish’s starting job this year and suffered a season-ending injury in the second game of 2015, but the Elite 11 finalist had impressive performances against LSU, Texas and Southern Cal.

He’s a dual-threat quarterback with 816 passing yards and 324 rushing yards in basically four games of action. Zaire ...

Harris entered the 2016 season as the Tigers’ starting quarterback. He had just 139 yards passing with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions in games against Wisconsin and Jacksonville State before Danny Etling took over as LSU’s starter.

Because he likely will graduate before the 2017 football season, Harris can transfer to another Football Bowl Series team and immediately be eligible.

Jacksonville State offensive lineman Casey Dunn has joined the program as a graduate transfer. Dunn was a two-time FCS All-American with the Gamecocks, who is from Trussville.

Dunn will not participate in the Tigers’ spring practices, which start next week.

Jacksonville State, who took Auburn to overtime during the 2015 season, had the most total yards and rushing yards per game in the Ohio Valley Conference.

“Stephen Davis Jr. is no longer with us.” Malzahn said.

In the weeks leading up to Auburn’s first spring workout on Feb. 28, Davis was removed from the team’s online roster. Davis is the son of former All-SEC running back Stephen Davis, who played for Auburn from 1993 to 1995.

While initially expected to contribute at defensive back, Davis worked with Auburn’s running backs following the dismissal of Jovon Robinson last August. The 6-foot-3, 206-pound freshman was later listed as a running back.

Malzahn was asked about Davis’ standing on multiple occasions last season amidst rumors of the freshman’s absence, but the head coach offered little insight into the situation.

Davis was a late addition to the 2016 signing class (which ranked 9th nationally and 5th in the SEC) after lots of back-and-forth during his recruitment.

Davis was sidelined for most of his final preps season after suffering a torn ACL and MCL.

The former LSU quarterback is on to the third school of his collegiate career, this time transferring to Tennessee Tech from Rutgers.

Rettig signed with LSU in 2013 but had decided to transfer by the following June. He played just four games for Rutgers during his two eligible seasons with the team.

“It’s a good fit,” Rettig told NJ.com, via 247 Sports. “I think we can do a lot there. I love the coaches. I just wanted a place where I was needed, and Tennessee Tech was the place.”

Former Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire, best known as a fine understudy for Deshone Kizer while in South Bend, is looking for a team to join to wrap up his college career, and the Gators are reportedly in the mix. Zaire threw for a little more than 800 yards, 6 touchdowns and no interceptions in his time at Notre Dame. His best performance came in the 2014 Music City Bowl, when he was named MVP. Although he never received much run for the Irish, he was considered one of the best backups in the country while playing second fiddle to Kizer.

He may not have the best numbers for a senior QB, but there is no doubt that he was fine player when called upon. And with an injured Luke Del Rio as the only QB on Florida’s roster with experience, Zaire would compete for that starting job the moment he stepped on campus and probably win it. From there, who knows how it would affect Florida’s 2017 season.

But Zaire’s decision isn’t solely his. Because of an SEC rule that requires graduate transfers to reach certain academic benchmarks at their new school, and if they don’t, a restriction is placed on the amount of graduate transfers the school can take in the future. Unfortunately for Florida, it accepted two graduate transfers in 2015 that didn’t meet the requirements, and are currently barred from taking any more. The SEC is reviewing the rule, though.

Greenwood, 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds and a Washington, D.C., native, was a 3-star prospect in high school. He picked Kentucky over Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Iowa, Maryland and Pittsburgh, according to his Wildcats bio.

Kentucky’s spring football roster listed 15 wide receivers, but that number is down one with Greenwood’s departure.

Corey Sutton is looking to transfer away from the Wildcats’ football program, but according to him, his scholarship release is not being granted. Earlier this month, Sutton announced his intentions to transfer from Kansas State after one season via his Twitter account. But according to The Wichita Eagle, K-State head coach Bill Snyder apparently isn’t granting his scholarship release. Sutton gave the school a list of 35 schools, all of which were denied...

“When I originally told Coach Snyder I was going to transfer he said, ‘Well, Corey, I feel bad that you want to leave, but I can’t make you stay,’ ” Sutton said via The Wichita Eagle. “I dropped all my classes, moved out of Kansas and started looking at my options, then I find out they are denying me my release.

“Coach Snyder told me today that when I signed my letter of intent that was my commitment to him, that I was going to be there for four years. I heard that and told him, ‘Coaches can leave. So why can’t a player leave? You made a commitment to me that you were going to treat me the right way and that’s not what you’re doing.’ ”

Sutton told the newspaper that his list of schools did not include any Big 12 schools, or future teams that Kansas State will face, and some were even FCS and Division II schools. All of them were denied. The receiver appealed that ruling on Wednesday this week, but the decision was upheld. Snyder later spoke with WHB 810 AM on Thursday, and clarified that a player is free to transfer but won’t get a release.

“It’s my commitment that once we have signed the youngster that we’re committed to him as long as he behaves himself,” Snyder said as transcribed by The Wichita Eagle. “I accept a youngster that comes into our program as making a similar commitment with a handshake and obviously a signed piece of paper.

Ben Baby Retweeted Corey Sutton

Funny how when student-athletes talk to the media, good things happen to them. Odd.
