Tennessee and Alabama are among the five programs battling for the services of Amari Rodgers, a 2017 four-star athlete out of Knoxville Catholic (Tenn.) High School.

Rodgers, the son of Southern Cal offensive coordinator and Tennessee legend Tee Martin, announced his top five on Twitter Thursday night. He is considering the Vols, Tide, Florida State, Clemson and Wake Forest, and will make his commitment public on Valentine’s Day. While UT signed only 3 instate players, it had commits from 3 of top 25 that went JUCO (Dorian Banks, Darel Middleton, Emmit Gooden).

UT offered/would take 5 instate that went elsewhere: WR Dillon Mitchell, OL Bryce Matthews, WR Nate Johnson, LB Tim Hart, DE Tariq Tisdale

Hitchhiking, ice cream cones, pet lizards -- some interesting #Vols recruiting stories. http://bit.ly/1Q02hIq

Quote
Perhaps the best tale from the recruiting trail was running backs coach Robert Gillespie's journey to see Carlin Fils-aime play in Immokalee, Fla., in September. One of the two pilots of the private plane wanted to accompany Gillespie to see Fils-aime play, and Gillespie welcomed him to come along when they landed at the closed regional airport.

"There's no (rental) car," Gillespie recalled during a recruiting celebration with fans at the Tennessee Theatre on Wednesday night. "So he and I start to walk, and we're literally on the side of the street hitchhiking. We can see the stadium. We can see the lights, but it's to far too to walk."

The pilot had the idea to find a mechanic's shop.

"There are three guys in there working on a car that do not speak English," Gillespie said. "The (pilot) looks at me and says, 'Coach Gillespie, I've got this. Let me handle it.' He goes in there and says, 'Hey, I have Coach Gillespie with me from Tennessee.' Those guys look at him like, 'We don't give a care who Gillespie is.'"

Then Gillespie took matters into his own hands.

"I said, 'I've got 20 bucks for anybody who can get us to the football game,'" he recalled, "and they said, 'Si, señor.'"

Once Gillespie and the pilot got to the game — already in progress — the pilot asked him which one was Fils-aime. As he asked the question, the Naples High School running back caught a swing pass and took it for a long touchdown.

"That's Carlin,'" Gillespie told the pilot. "He looks at me and says, 'No one would ever believe the journey we got to get here and see that touchdown.'"

Arizona Western College defensive end Jonathan Kongbo was the biggest of Tennessee's late additions, and head coach Butch Jones' visit to the top junior college prospect produced a memorable picture Kongbo posted on Twitter.

In the photo, he posed with Jones, Gillespie, defensive line coach Steve Stripling and new defensive coordinator Bob Shoop. All were holding ice cream cones. Shoop dubbed it "ice cream on the border" on Wednesday.

"A home visit can last anywhere from an hour to four hours," Jones said. "I think we broke the record with Kongbo. That was about eight hours.

"Coach Gillespie was a warrior, was relentless," he added. "That was about an eight-to-nine-hour trip, from eating tacos in the desert to butter pecan ice cream in the desert."

During one round of in-home visits, Jones said he had three home-cooked meals from the recruit's families...

Tennessee’s junior day will be about more than just juniors on Saturday. The Vols will host some of the top prospects around the region from all high school grade levels. (https://www.seccountry.com/tennessee/tennessee-to-host-a-bevy-of-visitors-this-weekend)

Quote
The highest rated prospect in the state of Tennessee, JaCoby Stevens, is scheduled to be in town. The five-star prospect from Oakland High School (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) is the No. 1 rated athlete prospect in the country and No. 1 overall prospect in the state. He has shown strong interest in Georgia lately.

One of the highest rated prospects scheduled to be in Knoxville, Tenn., is four-star defensive lineman Eric Crosby from Ocean Lakes High School (Virginia Beach, Va.).

Tennessee offers second California prospect this week (https://www.seccountry.com/tennessee/tennessee-offers-second-california-prospect-this-week)

Quote
Vols have offered a scholarship to two California prospects just this week. The latest was defensive end D.J. Johnson from Luther Burbank (Sacramento, Calif.). The four-star prospect received his scholarship offer on Wednesday.

“Honestly I’m not sure how they found me,” the 6-foot-5, 240-pound prospect said.

Johnson is the No. 13 weak-side defensive end in the country and the No. 19 prospect in California. Tennessee also offered a scholarship to offensive lineman Kanan Ray from Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.)...

Ray is the nephew of former Vols linebacker Judd Granzow, who played on Tennessee’s 1998 national championship team and is also from California.

Tennessee’s Butch Jones says Vols feeling side effects of Title IX lawsuit on recruiting trail http://sec.news/20TbuC5

Quote
The football coach said the recent run of bad publicity has had an effect. The Vols are facing a Title IX lawsuit that was filed by six unidentified women against the university alleging that Tennessee has created a “hostile sexual environment”. Since the suit became public, Tennessee’s football team has had two former players and a current player arrested on serious charges.

“Our competitors are using it against us,” Jones said during a press conference involving all 16 head coaches at Tennessee. “That’s why we’re having a number of unofficial visitors.”

Landing Nigel Warrior was a monstrous, late addition to Tennessee’s 2016 class. The four-star defensive back from Peachtree Ridge High School (Suwanee, Ga.) added another standout to the class and yet another legacy commitment for the Vols.

Warrior’s father, former Vols defensive back star Dale Carter, was certainly proud of his son. However, the decision to sign with Tennessee wasn’t a given until many coaching changes occurred among Warrior’s other suitors, namely LSU, Alabama and Georgia. (https://www.seccountry.com/tennessee/recruiting-rewind-with-nigel-warrior-they-did-not-like-me-whatsoever-i-know-that-for-a-fact)

Quote
“The coaching changes helped (the Vols) because it made everything a little dysfunctional,” Warrior’s mother, Tangie Warrior, told SEC Country. “I think he just felt home at Tennessee.”

Did you cut some media off? Yes, I did. I cut off Rivals. They didn’t like me for that. Three people would call me in the same day. They would call me at least four times a week. That’s why my ranking is so bad on Rivals, because they did not like me whatsoever. I know that for a fact.

Which school disappointed you the most during recruiting? Oregon.

Well, that's true.  Distract and deflect.

Seriously though, I realize that IMG is one of those football prep schools, along the lines of Oak Hill Academy and basketball, but offering half their roster??  It's not exactly offering a 13 year old a scholarship like Kiffin did, but it's along those lines.

Tennessee offers 20 prospects a scholarship – all from one school http://trib.al/hHQwF4r

Tennessee seems to like the talent at IMG Academy.

The Vols extended scholarship offers to 20 prospects enrolled in the private school in Bradenton, Fla., on Friday. Tennessee offered 13 prospects in the 2017 class, six in the 2018 class and one from the Class of 2019, according to a tweet by IMG head coach Kevin Wright, who called the move “unprecedented”.

Vols will direct their attention to out-of-state prospects this weekend for their second junior day of the year. (https://www.seccountry.com/tennessee/monster-weekend-for-tennessee-recruiting-on-tap)

Quote
While most prospects are still relatively close to Knoxville, Tenn., at least two will have to make a long trip to check out the Vols: four-star defensive end Zachary Carter from Hillsborough High School (Tampa, Fla.) and four-star offensive tackle Grayson Reed from Cypress Creek High School (Houston, Texas).

Vols will also try to test the dedication that four-star safety Xavier McKinney from Roswell (Ga.) High School has to Alabama. He committed to the Crimson Tide in September but that was before Kirby Smart left the Tide to become the head coach at Georgia.

Several states, outside of Tennessee, will be represented on Saturday. Four-star receiver Trey Blount from Pace Academy (Powder Springs, Ga.), four-star receiver/safety Hamsah Nasirildeen from Concord (N.C.) High School, four-star cornerback Amir Riep from Colerain High School (Cincinnati, Ohio), four-star tight end Logan Rudolph from Northwestern High School (Rock Hill, S.C.), four-star defensive end Jordan Williams from Frank W. Cox (Virginia Beach, VA) and four-star offensive tackle Jedrick Wills from Lafayette High School (Lexington, Ky.) are all expected to attend.

The Vols will host two four-star prospects from Bishop Sullivan Catholic (Virginia Beach, Va.): defensive tackle Breyon Gaddy and linebacker Teradja Mitchell.

Recruiting Rewind with Jonathan Kongbo: “I committed to Florida State” http://sec.news/22A8Zus

Quote
Jonathan Kongbo may have been Tennessee’s most significant signee in the 2016 class.

First, the defensive end from Arizona Western Junior College (Yuma, Ariz.) plays an impact position. Second, based upon his recruiting ranking as the top junior college prospect in the nation, he should be able to provide an immediate impact this season as the Vols try to reach sky-high expectations. Lastly, the Vols kept him away from bitter rival Alabama.

I didn’t find I wanted to go to Tennessee until that Monday morning (before National Signing Day on Wednesday). I was kind of committed to Florida State…I committed to Florida State on my visit. I kept it low key, but I switched it up.

Tyler Byrd’s late decision to sign with Tennessee instead of Miami was one of the surprises in the 2016 recruiting class. Suddenly, the Vols had plucked a four-star prospect from South Florida... (https://www.seccountry.com/tennessee/tyler-byrd-talks-about-making-switch-from-miami-to-tennessee)

Quote
Miami’s former interim head coach, Larry Scott, was suddenly the tight ends coach at Tennessee. Byrd’s recruitment was a roller-coaster ride, one that Byrd wishes he would have handled a bit differently.

It would be to wait until you know for sure that’s the school you want to go to and then make a commitment. Take all of your official visits, all of your unofficial visits and just weigh your options out fully before committing to a school.

University of Miami for sure came in second. I think really the player’s environment was a lot different.  I think there was more togetherness from Tennessee. Miami might get to the point where they are together, but Tennessee already has that togetherness.

During a speaking engagement at Mercedes-Benz of Knoxville on Friday morning, the Tennessee football coach admitted the car he drives makes an impact on the recruiting trail.

"Kids judge you by your car," Jones told the crowd. "It's crazy. "I was joking with another fellow SEC coach because the SEC Network came in and did a feature. They first did a feature on his car. So when they came to Knoxville, they did a feature on my car. My SLS."

The SLS carries a sticker price of $221,580 and features a 6.2 liter V-8 engine and Gull-wing doors that open vertically.

Jones, who wasn't made available to reporters during the appearance, clarified later Friday through UT spokesperson Ryan Robinson that the sports car he drives is a Mercedes S-Class Coupe, not an SLS, and is a private lease. An S-Class Coupe carries an MSRP value of $121,550.

Knoxville Catholic cornerback Jeffery Wood was named “the fastest man in Tennessee” by Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh during Tuesday night’s satellite camp at Oakland (Murfreesboro) High. The relatively unknown 5-foot-9 recruit blew past the rest of the field — which included dozens of future Division I players — in two separate competitions measuring speed and agility.

Wood said he currently has offers from a pair of Division II schools and has developed strong relationships with Tennessee-Chattanooga and Memphis.

We caught up with Wood moments after he finished a post-camp conversation with Michigan tight ends coach Jay Harbaugh, who first noticed the Knoxville prospect this spring.

Wood told SEC Country he also spoke with the Tennessee staff on Tuesday night. Earlier this year, he impressed Volunteers coach Butch Jones at a Knoxville Catholic-Oakland scrimmage.

“He told me that he likes the way I play,” Wood said.

Wood, who transferred from Farragut before his sophomore year, effectively missed two seasons of varsity football before being able to get his blazing speed on film.

His “dream school” is Arizona State. He attended a recent Sun Devils camp and maintains a relationship with defensive backs coach TJ Rushing.

“I like hot weather,” Wood said. “I wanted to play down in Florida, but I don’t like the humidity..."

“I thought ‘Orange Carpet’ was just a name for the recruiting (event), but there really was an orange carpet you walked down.

“We didn’t know anything about it, but we walk in, and there’s a DJ there going crazy, and then Coach Jones is right there, and the next thing I know I’m doing some interview.”

The interview was with a UT staff member — the event was closed to the media — and games and contests followed throughout the afternoon.

Coleman, now 6-foot-1 and 213 pounds at West Monroe (La.) High School, visited for Tennessee’s “Junior Day” on March 5.

“I wanted to come up again and make sure they still have all that love and passion for me,” Coleman said. “As far as picking Tennessee, you are evaluating what type of back you are and how your style relates to the programs.

“Tennessee likes to put their backs in space, not just a straight hand-off team. So they’ll run screens, some read options and I really like the handoffs out of the shotgun (formation).”

Coleman said he’s more confused than disappointed with his recruiting rating: “Yeah, those ratings must not be updated, because I’m the top back in this state...”

Which Tennessee 3-star commits will earn a higher ranking? (https://www.seccountry.com/tennessee/smoke-signals-which-tennessee-3-star-commits-could-ultimately-earn-a-higher-ranking)

Quote
Tennessee has 20 prospects currently ranked as 3-stars — tied for the most in the country.

Following summer camps, players move up and down lists. This fall, some will again see their stocks rise after strong senior seasons, while others will drop due to injuries, subpar showings, etc.

As for Tennessee’s commits who could reasonably earn a composite 4th star this fall: Florida athlete CJ Cotman, who is ranked just outside the Top 300 and was once a consensus 4-star prospect, versatile linebacker Jaquan Henderson from Newton High (Ga.), Hattiesburg wideout Jordan Murphy, Louisiana cornerback Cheyenne Labruzza and Hardin County defensive end LaTrell Bumphus.

Volunteers selling a ‘lifetime legacy’ to in-state recruits  (https://www.seccountry.com/tennessee/tennessee-volunteers-selling-a-lifetime-legacy-to-in-state-recruits)

Quote
“In-state recruiting is everything,” fourth-year coach Butch Jones said Friday during the team’s annual Media Day.

“We have to find the right fit for the University of Tennessee. … But it all does start in-state. In-state recruiting is very, very important to us. There’s a responsibility that comes along with a young man staying in-state and playing here.”

With that said, Jones knows he must flip a recent trend, as too many in-state blue-chippers are headed elsewhere.

In 2016, Tennessee signed just two of the state’s top 15 prospects. The Vols 2017 class includes just four of the state’s top 20 recruits. While Lane Kiffin recently trolled Tennessee over its in-state struggles, the narrative could be reshaped in 2018.

“When a young man stays at home and represents his home state, his home institution, that’s a lifetime legacy,” Jones said.

“That’s something that you’re going to want to come live in this state and be remembered forever. To me, that’s what it’s all about.”

Cade Mays has been going to Tennessee games since he was a little boy.

Now a 6-foot-5, 310-pound Volunteers commit, the 5-star UT legacy and Knoxville Catholic star can’t recall Neyland Stadium ever rocking as hard as it did Saturday during Tennessee’s thrilling comeback win over Florida.

“That was definitely the best environment I’ve ever seen in Neyland Stadium,” Mays told me.

Mays, who committed to Tennessee over a year ago, is the No. 11 prospect in the Class of 2018, so the 5-star offensive tackle has assumed the role of headline recruiter for the Volunteers.

Mays has relished in the responsibility, too, fulfilling a family legacy set by his father and uncle. Kevin Mays, Cade’s dad, was Tennessee’s team captain in 1994, earning All-SEC honors as an offensive lineman. His uncle played for the Vols, too.

This summer, Mays’ first target was 4-star Coffee County athlete Alontae Taylor.

Both Mays and Taylor have identified a ballyhooed bunch of targets, with prospects spanning the ’17, ’18 and ’19 classes.

During the Florida game, Taylor sat with nearly a dozen Tennessee 2017 commits, and the group made sure the surrounding top targets took notice.

“We were out there recruiting,” Taylor said.

“There were times when we made a big play and we — I was sitting with all the 2017 commits in a big group — and we just turned around and looked at Deangelo Gibbs and threw our hands up like, ‘What’s up? What are you going to do.’ We pointed at Trey Smith and were like, ‘What’s up? It’s the place to be. Why not Tennessee?’”

Smith, an offensive tackle from University School, remains Tennessee’s most important remaining target in the 2017 class.

Peach State — especially Atlanta — remains a fertile pipeline for Tennessee to mine top-shelf talent.

No. 11 Volunteers could start six Georgia natives on Saturday in Athens: Josh Dobbs, [Bama transfer and] tailback Alvin Kamara, safety Micah Abernathy, freshman cornerback Bay Buchanan, tight end Jason Croom and kick returner Evan Berry [Tennessee legacy]. Linebacker Cortez McDowell, a Locust Grove product, will play a ton, too.  Of course, Cam Sutton would be listed here if he weren’t sidelined with a serious ankle injury.

Under Jones, Tennessee has won some recruiting battles over the in-state Bulldogs — most notably 4-star safety Nigel Warrior, 4-star receiver Preston Williams and 4-star safety Micah Abernathy. But the Volunteers have also benefited from poaching some prospects UGA didn’t really recruit — guys like Sutton and McDowell.

Peach State has become such a hot-bed for blue-chip recruits, Georgia simply can’t keep’em all, so programs like Tennessee are swooping in and grabbing more than just the leftovers.

The 6-foot, 185-pound junior quickly developed a close relationship with secondary coach Willie Martinez, and the safety couldn’t wait to deliver the news to Martinez on Saturday evening.

“After the game, all the coaches were talking to all the recruits, so I pulled coach Martinez aside real quick and said, ‘You know, I’ve thought about it long and hard, I want to be a Vol,’” Richardson recounted.

“He just told me, ‘Once you make this decision you have to be 100 percent in.’ And I told him, ‘Coach, I’m all in. 100 percent.’”

Once Richardson gave Butch Jones the good news, he said the locker room was suddenly “happy” and there were “all smiles and cheers.”

Labruzza committed to Tennessee following an unofficial visit during its spring game, and stayed firm in his verbal pledge, despite engaging with LSU and Oklahoma State in recent months. Labruzza has been a major target for the Tigers, who liked him as a versatile defensive back who could play cornerback or safety.

Tennessee is looking to recapture its glory from the 1990s.

With longtime receivers coach Zach Azzanni out and Kevin Beard in, it appears that attrition could come in the form of 4-star 2019 receiver Kentrell Scurry — but it’s not that simple.

Azzanni announced Monday night that he wasn’t de-committing from Tennessee but would be “open up” his recruitment. Scurry has been committed to the Vols since July 26, just three months after Tennessee offered him.

The "vibe," Jaylon Reed said, was the reason he chose to commit to Tennessee over Ole Miss, Mississippi State and the nearly 20 other Division I programs who offered him.

"When I got on campus the coaching staff knew me, the players knew me, everyone knew me by name," said Reed, a  senior cornerback for Olive Branch. "It felt like I was a priority. When you get that feeling like you're home even though you're outside of Mississippi you just gotta go with it."

It wasn't just the vibe that helped Reed make this decision. The academic experience into which he was given a sneak peek was another major factor in his commitment. He's focused on football but has dreams beyond it —

Tennessee football recruiting mailbag: Keeping Georgia commits, Cade Mays and coaching search http://sec.news/2mTIXEF   #VFL
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DPQ-fIgUEAAKqaV.jpg)

Quote
Holding on to defensive backs Trey Dean and Jaycee Horn is paramount for the new coach.

It is a positive that neither have de-committed and a really good sign for the Vols. Tennessee athletic director John Currie has talked with both. Currie has done a good job  calming the nerves of the recruiting class from what I can gather.

Being able to hold on to either recruit will come down to who is hired. If Dean and Horn believe it is a good hire who can bring the Vols to the top of the SEC, then I believe they will stay.

Horn has better offers...

I detailed where Tennessee stands with de-commit Cade Mays ...

Mays and Tennessee aren’t done by any means. He seems to really like Clemson, and Georgia made a great pitch to him. He’s from Tennessee and was a commit for over two years. He knows many of the players and has too many connections to Knoxville to count.

All this is to say, if the Vols nail the coaching hire, then I believe Tennessee is right back in the middle of the hunt for Mays.

There won’t be much time for convincing, though.

As a sophomore, he threw for 3,286 yards and 35 touchdowns for the Panthers and ran for 765 yards and seven scores. He replaced his brother Tre, who is now at Richmond, at the quarterback position. His father, Clifford Story, is Lanett's head coach.

Kristian picked up his Tennessee offer in January. His other offers included Alabama, Georgia, Louisville, Mississippi State and Jacksonville State.
