Title: Auburn Football Recruiting
Post by: jbcarol on February 04, 2016, 10:29:16 am
Gus Malzahn calls nearly 50 juniors on National Signing Day (http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2016/02/gus_malzahn_thinks_ahead_calls_50_juniors.html)

Quote
Malzahn was getting a head start on recruiting juniors, telling them that they, too, could be at the center of attention in one short calendar year.

"We've been thinking about the juniors for a long period of time," Malzahn said. "Every year it seems like it gets earlier and earlier."

Auburn has offered scholarships to 114 players in the 2017 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. The Tigers have secured three commitments. Five-star Calvin Ashley, an offensive tackle, leads the group. Recruiting will pick up in the spring, particularly when spring practices end during the second week of April.

"I appreciate our staff through the transition," Malzahn said. "We lost three of our coaches, and they did a wonderful job. They are a very hardworking and loyal staff."

An early look at Auburn's recruiting needs for National Signing Day in 2017
http://bit.ly/1nKKY0S

Quote
Following the 2016 season, Auburn will lose 16 scholarship seniors, with a few juniors, including Carl Lawson, also likely to considering leaving early.

Three players are already committed to Auburn's 2017 recruiting class.

QUARTERBACK

Completing eligibility after 2016 season: Jeremy Johnson
Eligibility remaining after 2016: John Franklin III, Sean White, Tyler Queen, Woody Barrett
What Auburn needs in 2017: Assuming John Franklin III does not perform to a level warranting an early departure for the NFL, Auburn will have four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster heading into the 2017 season...

RUNNING BACK

Completing eligibility after 2016 season: Jovon Robinson
Eligibility remaining after 2016: Roc Thomas, Kerryon Johnson, Malik Miller
What Auburn needs in 2017: Auburn won't have a between-the-tackles, every-down back...

Recapping Auburn's national signing day http://es.pn/1PKAxp9

Quote
But if there’s one spot where the Tigers could have added another body, it was at linebacker, where they lost all three starters from a season ago. Yet the coaches signed just one linebacker, Tre Threat. And while Threat is ranked in the ESPN 300 and has the versatility to play either inside or outside, there's no depth.

Auburn's top quarterback targets in 2017 class http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2016/02/auburns_top_quarterback_target_1.html …

Lowell Narcisse (6-foot-3, 200 pounds | St. James, La.)

The four-star prospect was committed to Auburn from July 2015 to January 2016. He opened up his recruitment because he felt he "rushed and made a premature decision." Narcisse remains Auburn's No. 1 priority at the quarterback position, though Auburn has had difficulty recruiting players out of Louisiana.

Jake Bentley (6-foot-4, 215 pounds | Opelika, Ala.)

Bentley was targeted by Auburn early in the process. His father, Bobby Bentley, served as an offensive analyst at Auburn for two year before being hired by Will Muschamp at South Carolina

These are the linebacker targets #Auburn is looking at for 2017: http://ow.ly/Y8nSX

Quote
Markail Benton (6-foot-2, 227 pounds | Phenix City, Ala.)

Benton is right in Auburn's back yard and he is a frequent visitor to the Plains, which obviously bodes well for the Tigers. His recently-released top 10 schools are Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and South Carolina.

Benton's former teammate, cornerback John Broussard, signed with Auburn and enrolled last month. He has expressed interest in re-joining Broussard at the next level, but Alabama could be a threat. Benton is the No. 4 outside linebacker prospect in the 247Sports Composite.

Dylan Moses (6-foot-2, 220 pounds | Bradenton, Fla.)

The Baton Rouge native is a consensus five-star prospect and is the No. 1 overall player in the 247Sports Composite for the 2017 cycle...

The No. 1 prospect in the state of Alabama doesn’t see himself playing college football in the Yellowhammer State.

Tank Jenkins, a 2018 four-star offensive tackle from Park Crossing High School (Montgomery, Ala.), told SEC Country that he doesn’t want to be one of those in-state athletes that automatically go to either Alabama or Auburn. (https://www.seccountry.com/alabama/no-1-prospect-in-alabama-doesnt-see-himself-playing-college-football-in-state)

Quote
“I’m not trying to be that type of person that people say ‘everybody from Alabama goes to Alabama or Auburn,”’ Jenkins said. “I’m not trying to be that type of person to just go to Alabama or Auburn.”

The 6-foot-4, 315-pounder believes that leaving the state would be “best for his life” so he could find a place that fits him best and not just a school that other people want him to attend.

“Alabama and Auburn are good schools, and I have a great time when I go down there, but I want to take my talent and take it far away from Alabama and get out of Alabama,” he said. “I think that would be best for my life.”

Jenkins notes that Bama and Auburn are his leaders at this time.

Four-star athlete Jamyest Williams has heard little from Auburn since defensive brain trust Will Muschamp and Travaris Robinson took off for South Carolina, hoping to establish more contact  (https://www.seccountry.com/auburn/four-star-athlete-has-heard-little-from-auburn-hoping-to-establish-more-contact)

Quote
“I just have to see where I stand with them because I haven’t heard much from them,” said Williams, the No. 5 athlete in 2017. “Coach (Gus) Malzahn had followed me on Twitter, but I haven’t had much contact with them. We’ll see how much interest they have in me.”

He unofficially visited The Plains on multiple occasions, with his most recent visit coming in mid-November.

It would seem Muschamp and Robinson’s absence has led to little communication between both parties.

Kevin Steele made contact with Williams during his tenure at LSU but has yet to reach out to the Lawrenceville, Ga., native since being introduced as Auburn’s new defensive chief.

“When he was at LSU, I did,” Williams said when asked if he has had contact with Steele. “But I haven’t heard much from him now.”

“It’s a really big factor,” Williams said of the new coaching staff. “Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks I’ll hear from them.”

Recruiting Big Board: Examining Auburn’s top running back targets in 2017 http://sec.news/1QIKnDW

Quote
Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is in search of running backs in 2017

SEC Country examined the top running back targets

Cordarrian Richardson, four-star running back, Memphis, Tenn.
Auburn is certainly in play for Richardson, the No. 5 running back in 2017. Assistant coach Tim Horton has led the charge

Adarius Lemons, four-star running back, Clearwater, Fla.
Lemons reportedly holds Auburn at No. 2 behind North Carolina. The four-star running back is rated No. 12 at his position in 2017.

Cam Akers, four-star running back, Clinton, Miss.
Bama commit may be the most difficult prospect to sign among this group of running backs. Akers, rated as the No. 3 running back in the country, has been committed to the Crimson Tide since August. While he plans to visit Auburn unofficially, ...

Trey Sermon, four-star running back, Marietta, Ga.
Auburn is among the early favorites for the four-star running back. Sermon unofficially visited the Plains less than two weeks ago. It was his first visit since the spring of last year. Sermon, rated as the No. 10 running back in the country...

Hicks is not yet rated by recruiting services, but his offers besides Auburn included FIU, Florida Atlantic, Kentucky, Miami and Oregon State.

Gus Malzahn treated himself with a new car. Probably doesn't hurt recruiting, either: http://ow.ly/Z4M0p

Quote
"I've never had a sports car," Malzahn said. "I turned 50, you know, and figured it was time to go ahead and get one."

The car carries a retail price of $140,700. He took prized recruit Tray Bishop on a ride in the car in late February.

"When (Malzahn) pulled up, he came over to me and whispered in my ear, 'That's my new ride,'" Bishop told AL.com in February. "He was like, 'Before you leave I want to spin a few blocks with you.' Before the basketball game he came and got me and told me a little bit about the car and we drove."

Bishop wants to play quarterback and Malzahn's staff is offering him a chance to do so with the Tigers.

Graduate transfer defensive back Marshall Taylor told AL.com Saturday he plans to visit Auburn next weekend. 6-foot-2, 199-pounder from Cordele, Georgia, has tallied 109 tackles (78 solo) and three interceptions in his career at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Joey Gatewood turned 16 on Sunday and won't enroll in college until 2018, and yet, he is quickly becoming one of Auburn's most-hyped commitments.

6-foot-4, 226-pound quarterback at Bartram Trail in Jacksonville has garnered comparisons to Cam Newton by fans, the media and even Auburn's coaches.

Did Auburn's coaches compare you to any quarterbacks?

JG: "Oh yeah, Cam Newton. Cam's my idol. I'm a huge fan. He's been my idol since like sixth grade. I had no clue who Auburn was until he got there... I didn't know much about college football. I only knew about Florida and that was really it. I didn't really focus on the school when he was there because I was young, but when I got the chance to go down there I was like, 'Cam went to school here, that's pretty cool.'"

What did Malzahn say to you?

JG: "When I first walked into Malzahn's office we sat down and we talked with my mom and all. I remember he was like, 'You're the closest thing I've seen to Cam as a recruit since he was here. You saw how he Cam excelled in this offense.' I really think I can excel in the offense too. I have the same three goals as he did when he came: Win the Heisman, win a national championship and become a first-round draft pick at No. 1."

You've probably seen the story by now, the one about Gus Malzahn comparing a 16-year-old Auburn quarterback commit for 2018 to Cam Newton.

Malzahn didn't make that comparison in public. According to the young man, Joey Gatewood, Malzahn made that comparison to Gatewood himself. And his mom.

Gatewood described the conversation this way.

"When I first walked into Malzahn's office we sat down and we talked with my mom and all. I remember he was like, 'You're the closest thing I've seen to Cam as a recruit since he was here. You saw how he excelled in this offense.' "

My first reaction: Oh, no, he didn't.

Second reaction: Cam Newton? Really? God made only one of those.

Marlon Character Jr. hoped to enroll at Auburn this week, but still has some work to do academically.

According to his father, the safety at Grady High School in Atlanta needs to lift his grade in an online class that end Friday. He is also retaking the ACT July 6. With the necessary marks, either will get him to Auburn July 31.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Kadarius Toney committed to Florida last month, but other schools haven’t stopped coming after him.

Toney, rated as a four-star athlete by ESPN and Scout, received an offer from Alabama two weeks after his decision. Auburn is also recruiting the Prichard, Ala., product, and he visited the school in April.

Could the Tide or Tigers threaten Toney’s pledge?

“No,” he bluntly told SEC Country. “There’s really nothing they could do. I made up my mind already.”

Toney $aid he received “confirmation” that UF is the right place for him on his first-ever trip to Gainesville this weekend.

Auburn plans to add 1 quarterback to 2017 recruiting class (http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2016/07/auburn_plans_to_add_1_quarterb.html)

Quote
"As a general rule, we always like to sign just one (quarterback) if we can," Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee told AL.com this summer in Brentwood, Tennessee. "We signed one in the 2016 class, we plan to sign one in the 2017 and 2018 class, but that can always change."

So far, Auburn has yet to find that prospect.

Tigers currently do not have a quarterback committed to the 2017 class, and the team recently missed out on ex-Baylor commit Kellen Mond, who chose A&M instead.

At one point, four-star quarterback Lowell Narcisse was in line to be that guy in the 2017 class, but after a nearly-six-month commitment to Auburn, the Saint James, Louisiana, prospect decommitted in January. This summer, Narcisse verbally committed to LSU —

Another potential option is the transfer market, where players such as Baylor's Jarrett Stidham, who recently announced his decision to leave the program before his sophomore season, could be available. Stidham was the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the 2015 class and held an offer from Auburn before choosing Baylor.

"You don't want to lock yourself in, because you never know what happens from guys transferring out, to injuries, to guys leaving early for the draft," Lashlee said. "In 2013 we brought in two guys and 2015 we brought in two guys. In one case they both stayed at quarterback, in another case on [sic] guy ended up moving to receiver. If things go the way they should, we'll probably sign one guy. That's ideal."

The younger Davis, who lives in Irmo, was committed to play for the Tigers from August 2014 until Sept. 2015, but a season-ending knee injury reportedly required surgery on his ACL and MCL.

Monty Rice had one of the biggest plays Friday in James Clemens' 28-6 win over Clay-Chalkville.

With his team up 14-6 late in the third and the Cougars driving, Rice intercepted a Willie Miller pass and returned it 50 yards into Clay-Chalkville territory.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Rice, a middle linebacker for James Clemens, lumbered and shook off tacklers before being run down.

Rice, a three-star recruit, mentioned Georgia, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Florida State and Tennessee as schools he's looking at now, but added that he is taking his recruitment slow.

Rice will be in Auburn Saturday to watch the Tigers host LSU.

"I really want to see how they respond, especially after the Texas A&M loss," Rice said. "It's going to be a tough SEC West game."

Rice is feeling the love from Auburn coaches.

"(Running backs coach) Tim Horton writes me about every other day and so does (linebackers coach) Travis Williams," Rice said. "I think Gus Malzahn is a terrific head coach. They're off to a slow start, but they're playing terrific defense."

Georgia inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann watched Rice in action Friday night.

"I love Georgia," Rice said. "(Head coach) Kirby Smart is a terrific leader. I believe in coach Smart and what he's doing."

AUBURN, Ala. — It took 23 days for Auburn to replace defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff with Greg Brown.

The new Tigers secondary coach brings a 30-plus-year history to the coaching staff. He has stops at Missouri, Louisville and Alabama recently.

Auburn has nothing to worry about with its four defensive back commitments Malcolm Askew, Traivon Leonard, Jordyn Peters and Carlito Gonzalez.

Askew is already on campus as an early enrollee, so Auburn has no retention concerns with him.

Leonard was always an interesting one to track. The 3-star cornerback from Florida was a McGriff disciple, through and through.

“That’s a big-time hire. I can barely function I’m so excited,” Leonard said. “I was never worried. I just stood still and trusted the process.”

Leonard still hasn’t met Brown, or spoken to him.

Peters’ Jan. 20 visit won’t be his only official visit in January, however. He also will take one to Virginia Tech either the first weekend or the last weekend of the contact period, but Peters hasn’t officially nailed down the date.

That brings us to the final secondary commitment the class — Carlito Gonzalez.

He was the only committed member that hinted at some uncertainty following the McGriff departure. Gonzalez expressed some concern because of the constant turnover at the position since he committed in 2015. It forced him to consider a possible reopened recruitment, including South Carolina and Ole Miss.

Two of Lashlee's biggest recruits, quarterback Jarrett Stidham and athlete Malik Willis, are already enrolled at Auburn and thus [will] not be contacted directly by the media.

National Signing Day is less than a month away. The biggest concern for Auburn, and what a problem to have, lies in the 2018 class. Four-star quarterback Joey Gatewood at Jacksonville Bartram Trail is the nation's No. 3 dual-threat quarterback and Lashlee was the reason. Gatewood called the news "heartbreaking" and "brotherly, father-son" relationship. "He played a huge role in my commitment. I believe in him. It really sucks. I don't know. It really does suck. I don't really have any words for it."

When Auburn offered Chase Lasater a scholarship last month, Rhett Lashlee was the team's offensive coordinator. Lashlee has since left for Connecticut, and Auburn replaced him Saturday morning by hiring Chip Lindsey away from Arizona State.

That leaves Lasater playing the waiting game as Lindsey reviews the H-back target's film to determine if the offer is still committable.

"They offered me a few weeks ago at practice, but I would like to know 100 percent with a letter of intent and all that," Lasater said Sunday after his official visit to Auburn. "Once I have that, then most definitely I'll be out here.

"I don't want to commit because I don't want to throw out my other options. I just want to know it's a 100 percent thing before I do make a final decision as I would with any school."

The other H-back Auburn was targeting in this class, Spanish Fort star Thomas Johnston, eliminated the Tigers from his recruitment during a visit to Ole Miss Sunday.

The day after Lasater left Auburn, Lindsey extended his first offer as offensive coordinator to John Samuel Shenker, a combo recruit who can play H-back, tight end and receiver. “Once again, the state of Alabama was a priority for us,” Malzahn said last Wednesday. “We signed 10 players from the state of Alabama, six from the state of Georgia and four from Florida. Those are our three states we make our living in so real pleased with that.”

Auburn picked up six consensus 4-stars from its home state — defensive end Tadarian Moultry, offensive tackle Austin Troxell, defensive back Malcolm Askew, athlete Alaric Williams, wide receiver Noah Igbinoghene and linebacker KJ Britt.

“When I think about T.D., he’s one of the best players, if not the best player, in the state,” Malzahn said. “He’s a 5-star guy. He took no other visits. He was extremely loyal to us, and he helped us recruit. He’s got a unique skill set. … We’re very excited about T.D. We think he can come in here and help right off the bat.”

Auburn signed as many in-state blue chip recruits as Alabama in the 2017 class. The last time that happened was 2007, when Saban was only a month into the job in Tuscaloosa.

While the Crimson Tide signed higher-rated Alabama players and locked down the nation’s No. 1 overall class for a seventh consecutive season, they didn’t hold a massive advantage over Auburn with in-state recruiting.

4-star OL Trey Hill, Houston County (Ga.): Hill keeps visiting Auburn. It took him four or five visits before receiving an offer, but that didn’t scare the big offensive lineman away

4-star WR Kearis Jackson, Peach County (Ga.): Jackson will make his final decision Aug. 19, and for the time being, I’d be shocked if he picked anyone other than Georgia

4-star LB JJ Peterson, Colquitt County (Ga.): Peterson has the persona of an Alabama linebacker, and he’s also called the Crimson Tide his leader during every interview

4-star CB Christian Tutt, Thomson (Ga.): Tutt’s recruitment has been a whirlwind, so it’s impossible at this time —

Buzz at Auburn despite non-Power 5 opponent (https://www.seccountry.com/auburn/auburn-recruiting-insider-alabama-georgia)

Quote
Recruiting has picked up steam since beating the nation’s top-ranked team at the time. This shouldn’t come as a surprise.

It’s placed Auburn in a situation it hasn’t been in for, at least, the last two recruiting cycles. The Tigers finally have some momentum. Auburn is the place to be a week from now, just as it was the place to be a week ago.

In only a week since the Auburn-Georgia game, several important recruiting events have occurred. Most importantly, Auburn picked up its first cornerback in the Class of 2018. Christian Tutt chose Auburn over Ohio State and Nebraska.

Auburn hosted several high-priority prospects in the 2019 and 2020 classes for the Louisiana-Monroe game. A few commits were in attendance. The weekend didn’t have as much buzz as the week prior, but with so much to look ahead to next week, there were still several recruiting tidbits to take away from the day:

Auburn picked up its second commitment of the day on Tuesday and its second overall commit in the 2020 class.

Stephenson High (Lithonia, Ga.) running back Deondre Jackson committed to the Tigers on Tuesday night, just hours after 2018 Australian punter Arryn Siposs officially committed to the program.

Jackson is the second commit in Auburn's 2020 class, joining defensive end Andy Boykin, who committed last month.

Jibunor was booked into the Athens-Clarke County Jail at 4:38 a.m. ET before being released on $2,000 bond about three hours later. He was charged with DUI as well as failing to maintain lane and improper driving.

Jibunor is a 4-star pass rusher recruit out of Athens, Georgia. He chose the Tigers over offers from Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Louisville and several other major programs.

Jibunor did not sign during the early signing period from Dec. 20-22. He could still de-commit or part ways with the Tigers. Because he did not sign, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn can not publicly comment on this situation.

One of Auburn's biggest remaining needs before National Signing Day just became its biggest challenge.

Auburn signed two linemen during December's early signing period, but coach Gus Malzahn said the team needed another "impact O-lineman or two" to close out the class as Auburn tries to replace four starters along the line. Doing so became more difficult on Tuesday, as offensive line coach Herb Hand left the program to become the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator at Texas. That leaves Malzahn with a position to fill on his coaching staff and the Tigers with a greater sense of urgency in offensive line recruiting with three weeks remaining in the recruiting cycle.

"We'd like to be at 15 (linemen), that's why we still want to get two more guys in this class," Hand told AL.com last week in Charlotte. "We feel good. With three guys coming back that have all started multiple SEC games and (Prince) Tega (Wanogho) played a lot of reps for us at left tackle and played well. I'm real excited about what we have coming back and we got to have some guys step up and we've got to continue to develop them. I like where we're at."

Last month, Auburn signed four-star lineman Jalil Irvin and three-star lineman Kameron Stutts during the early signing period, and both were on campus last weekend for their official visits. Irvin projects as a center at Auburn, while Stutts is expected to play guard in college.

With National Signing Day 2018 in the books and Auburn's class of 24 signees, here's a look back at what we thought the Tigers needed a year ago https://trib.al/eF0HIFS
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DVjokuqXUAAu-xJ.jpg)

Quote
Quarterback

Projection: 1 or 2
Actual: 1 - Joey Gatewood

Running back

Projection: 2-3
Actual: 3 - Asa Martin, Harold Joiner, Shaun Shivers

Offensive line

Projection: 5-7
Actual: 2 - Jalil Irvin, Kam Stutts
Why we were off: Auburn failed to meet its stated goal of at least five offensive linemen. It's possible graduate transfers offset this shortfall slightly.

Defensive line

Projection: 2-3
Actual: 5 - Richard Jibunor, Daquan Newkirk, Caleb Johnson, Coynis Miller, Kayode Oladele
Why we were off: Departures of Antwuan Jackson and Byron Cowart were not anticipated.
