  • We're less than 48 hours away!  Great field; great course.  And Tiger too!

I hope par wins and not some ridiculous number on either side of par - too easy like Erin Hills last year or too ridiculous like Shinnecock last time it was there or Winged Foot any number of years.  Here's hoping the USGA gets the set up right and makes it extremely difficult but not over the edge.

Who ya got?  I'll take Raffie Cabrera-Bello.  Great putter and playing well.

  • Dustin Johnson is going to be hard to beat.  Rory is playing pretty well but needs to get out of the pattern of starting slowly every tournament.  And...I think the guy who has finished in the top four the last two times the Open has been at Shinnecock will be right there, too.

    Jeff Maggert?

  • I'm going with Rickie Fowler. He's due a major.

:)   He's no Bernhard Langer, that's for sure..

Well I'll be a...I didn't realize Maggert finished top four both times.

Actually I was thinking of the other guy, Mickelson.

  • Tiger will not contend.  I won't be surprised if he misses the cut.  He will try to muscle up to keep up with Dustin and Justin Thomas off the tee and be a frequent visitor to U.S. Open rough.

If he tries hitting stingers all week he may succeed in making the cut, but he's not going to have a chance to win that way.

I agree.  Userpick and I were arguing about this the other day.

I sure do hope he’s right.

Phil tees off at 7:02 our time.  We'll have good idea how it's been set up in a couple hours.

Either Phil, Rory, and Jordan Spieth are all playing terribly or the course is brutally hard with today's setup and conditions.  After four holes Phil is 3 over...and has the lowest score in the group.  Rory is headed for at least double bogey and Spieth has a 40 footer for par on 14.
  • #16 by golf2day on 14 Jun 2018
  • This is brutal.

Also, whoever the announcer is that just coined the term ďover-scientifickingĒ should be taken out back and put out of his misery.
  • #17 by EastexHawg on 14 Jun 2018
  • It's a bloodbath.  Through five holes Mickelson is +3, Spieth is +5, and McIlroy is +6.  Phil just made a par on 14 that felt like I was watching a birdie after all the awful holes played.  That 14th hole is 516 yards long, par four, and the fairway looked like one strip mowed with my 46 inch cut Craftsman in a sea of almost knee high fescue.

I think all of these guys have to fight off the feeling that their U.S. Opens are over after five holes.  74 or 75 probably isn't going to shoot anyone out of the tournament today.  150 may make the cut.

  • 150 may be top 25. Iím digging this course. Hit it in the fairway and hit the middle of the green and youíre gonna be fine. Miss the fairway or green by a few feet and youíre ok in that first cut. Miss either by a few yards and youíre like Phil, asking ďis there any rule that says I can move some of this grass so that I can see my ball while Iím swinging?Ē
  • #20 by EastexHawg on 14 Jun 2018
  • The guys who start pressing and hitting drivers on every hole trying to make up strokes better hope they are as straight off the tee as Calvin Peete.  Spieth has done it and striped it two out of three times.  Good thing, too, because hitting it in the long grass looks like an almost certain bogey...or double...or triple.

Is Angel Cabrera in this field?

If Tiger comes out hitting stingers he may shoot 67. If he comes out ripping driver he may shoot 87.

The problem with playing it "safe" off the tee was demonstrated on the hole where Mickelson hit a long iron and had 215 to the hole.  Spieth hit a driver and had 167.  With the tiny areas you have to play to on a lot of these greens can you really afford to come in from 200 plus all day?

Looks like a pick your poison week to me. Play it like he play the Ď06 British. Hope the long iron game is tight. Unless heís made a big change he just has too big of a miss with his driver too pull it very often on this course.

  • #38 by EastexHawg on 14 Jun 2018
  • I think Phil is outsmarting himself with all the short clubs off the tee.  He had 233 into the 18th hole.  There is no way he should constantly have 40-50 yards farther to the hole than Spieth.

You gotta get the Hulu live tv add on. They have a deal where you get a week free. Once you get that do a search for FS1, and just watch that sumbitch.
