Penny Hardaway: “I would love to play Arkansas.”

New Memphis coach Penny Hardaway says he’d love to have Arkansas on the schedule

Quote
“What I do remember about Arkansas was they always had three or four Memphis guys on the team,” Hardaway said. “That’s what made the rivalry so special. There were always Memphis guys playing for the University of Arkansas. And they’d come back home or we’d go there and we’d play against the guys that we grew up playing against since we were young, and that kind of sparked the rivalry. Those games were always very intense.”

I guess we are no longer just a regional school to Memphis.  Sucking for a few years will do that to you.

And this is the real reason Penny wants to play. He knows the talent in Arkansas AAU is very good. And, the Arkansas media will play right along and give him a platform on which to recruit.

That's not going to happen. Memphis will do what they have to do to keep Memphis talent home now. They have heavily invested in Penny. We haven't been able to get any top Memphis talent since the 90's and Nolan. That's not going to suddenly change now. We can play them yearly, and it would be fun. But, let's not kid ourselves. We aren't getting Memphis talent.

You don’t think Penny Hardaway will fix every pothole in Memphis? Then you haven’t been paying attention to the optimism in this city.

To hear Memphians tell it, there’s no limit to the headlines Hardaway may generate:

“Liberty Bowl tailgating area renamed Penny Lane.”

“Penny most popular baby name in West Tennessee for both genders.”

I'd love to see the rivalry renewed. We'll see how it works when it comes to recruiting, but firstly I just want to see the two teams play on the court

Hardaway's connections to Arkansas high school talent through "Team Penny" should be concerning.
Even though he's had to step away from "Team Penny" - those AAU connections will still be there.
Plus he's able to keep his interest in the minority investment group with the Grizzlies due to the fact he's not a decision maker - that most certainly can't hurt his recruiting.

Scott Edgar was the lead recruiter in Memphis under Nolan.  W'eve done it before, we can do it again.  I look at Memphis the way this board look at Texas football recruiting:  he can't sign all the great players.  His name & shoes will attract Ark players he wants(probably like D Hall).  Why are we afraid to go head to head against them on the court & in recruiting?  Mike gets paid 1 million USD more per year than that rookie Penny.

Pretty sick and tired of this small minded, little ole Arkansas mindset.  A lot of posters in MMQB say these things as well.

There is not one reason why wouldn't should be able to tap into Memphis talent and out recruit Memphis for a player.

Arkansas has a ton of instate talent coming up in the next several years, I would be more concerned with keeping as much of that talent at home than poaching a kid from Memphis.

With the upswing in talent in Arkansas it would actually benefit Memphis more to play Arkansas than it would Arkansas to play Memphis.  One of the reasons they stopped playing us was to shut off the flow of talent from Memphis to Arkansas.  Why would we want to help them regain regional relevance in any way shape or form?

IMO Penny will kill it on the recruiting front with his connections in Arkansas & Memphis.  We will need to catch up.

AAU and FedEx are still there. And, might want to revisit a little history of Memphis Basketball. They were known to have issues long before Cal. Dana Kirk ring a bell?

One of my late dad's work contacts took him to see the Hogs play Memphis in a luxury box at the Bass Pro Shop, er uh Pyramid, back in the day. I think the Hogs lost, but that was probably one of his best Razorback memories. Sitting with a bunch of fans with unlimited food and drink and watching the Hogs. I wasn't able to go with him, but I heard him gush about the experience for weeks.

We grew up poor in Pine Bluff and I don't remember him going to many games (a couple of games in Pine Bluff and maybe 1 football game in WMS) but he never missed a game on TV or radio. So a game in a luxury box was, quite literally, a once in a lifetime experience.

He passed away in a hospital bed from cancer right after Jonathan Williams scored the TD in the 4th quarter of the Texas Bowl to beat the hated Longhorns. I guess he figured the Hogs didn't need his help anymore. (He was so very wrong about that.)

So, for my Dad's sake I vote "YES" to a renewed series with Memphis.

I know how you feel.  I also lost my dad from cancer while he was in a hospital bed (lost him in 2016).

A big middle finger to cancer.  Cancer is the worst thing to ever happen in this world.

You think Memphis Basketball > Arkansas Basketball?

Over the last 15 years yes. Certainly not in the 90’s. But, Memphis is a basketball town. And they do want to win. And, they are likely in my opinion, to be far more aggressive in pushing the envelope than Mike will. That will also likely increase the scrutiny on their program.

It's not the, "Little ole Arkansas" mindset. it's more the, "Little ole MA" mindset. I think only his biggest cultist have faith that MA and staff could go to Memphis and get good to elite players in the area. Another HC, sure maybe. MA? No way. That would mean you have to do more then the bare minimum. And we know that's NOT MA and staff's M.O.

we used to play memphis and get a lot of recruiting from that area.  the roles have reversed now.  i believe we have more talent coming out of the state than memphis does now.   so of course penny wants to play us so he can get a foot hold in LR and in the state.  i say F him if he thinks he is gonna do it.   i wouldnt do it if im Mike.   we should deny them and say the same thing they said to us when Cal told us he wanted something more national instead of lowly us.

Memphis will always have more basketball players than Arkansas. The #1 player for 2019 currently goes to East located in Memphis

Penny just signed 2 4-star point guards.  Alex Lomax of Penny’s East state champ team had signed with Wichita St but got his release to sign with Memphis. Yesterday Tyler Harris of Cordova had been committed to Baylor but signed with Penny

Memphis will always have more basketball players than Arkansas. The #1 player for 2019 currently goes to East located in Memphis
i dont know, arkansas is churning out some stars.  per capita, we may be in the top 4 producing talent.    if we could just keep them all instate, we'd be fine.  then cherry picking some kids.  i still dont want to play memphis.  F penny.   he's dirty, he was dirty when he went to memphis himself, and he's dirty now.  they were dirty under Crapilari, and are dirty again.  so F him.  he can suck rocks.
