Texas A&M closes out #NSD18 with 4-star ATH and former Alabama commit Vernon Jackson

Boling's Vernon Jackson is one of the most unique athletes in the state of Texas. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound senior can project to almost any position in college. A high school quarterback and linebacker, he is being recruited as a running back, h-back, fullback, tight end, defensive end and linebacker by different programs.

Jackson had been committed to Alabama since mid-September but, after waiting until Wednesday evening to make an announcement, he has now flipped to Texas A&M.

Jackson is the eighth player to commit to Texas A&M on what was a huge signing day for the Aggies. Six of the eight new signees were four-star prospects and two switched from Alabama to A&M.

The Aggies are still awaiting one more decision as junior college defensive end Dorian Gerald pushed back his signing date to Friday.

Jimbo Fisher on Aggies' National Signing Day: 'Texas A&M got a lot better today': … via @houstonchron

A&M put the bow on a signing class of 22 on Wednesday evening – although the bow might come off in the next day or two as the Aggies are still in the hunt for a couple of players.

The latest addition was running back Charles Strong of Union County High in Lake Butler, Fla., who inked with the Aggies while new coach Jimbo Fisher was holding his annual National Signing Day press conference.

"Texas A&M got a lot better today," Fisher said of the overall class of 22.

The Aggies had 15 pledges leading to Wednesday, including 10 early signees from December, and added seven "new" players to the mix. Fourteen are on offense and eight on defense.

Fourteen of the players also are from Texas, and three of the out-of-staters are from Alabama.

"(High school) football in the state of Texas is as good as anywhere," said Fisher, adding that A&M also needs to be a "national brand" as he recruits from coast to coast.

Fisher signed a quarterback in four-star prospect James Foster, although the Aggies already have three underclassmen on scholarship at the position in Nick Starkel, Kellen Mond and Connor Blumrick. Fisher said there can't be enough quarterbacks on a roster because of the potential for injuries.

Jimbo Fisher enjoys the bright lights of the big cities near Texas A&M (the bright lights coming from the high school football fields): … via @HoustonChron

Jimbo Fisher happily pointed out this week it's an "hour to the edge of Houston" from the Texas A&M campus. The new Aggies coach is like many others in Bryan-College Station - pleased to be a conversation away from the bright lights and shopping of the big city.

Only Fisher's bright lights radiate from high school football fields, and his primary treasure hunting involves finding players he believes will give A&M a chance to compete for Southeastern Conference and national titles.

"We're going to saturate this state from one end to the other," Fisher said of his recruiting philosophy in the nation's second-most populous state.

That saturation starts in and around four of the nation's 11 largest cities, and Fisher was well aware of a Texas map's markings when he uprooted from Florida State to take the A&M gig in December.

"There's (Houston), San Antonio, Dallas, that other town … Austin," Fisher said.

Demani Richardson is fast, physical and a flat-out playmaker in the secondary. He, @BWi11_ and @WakeEmUp9 are going to intimidate a lot of SEC pass-catchers in the future

With the addition of @therealdemani to the secondary, Fisher, Elko and the Ags have landed two of top six safeties in the nation and two of the top six prospects in Texas, IMO

Elite CB prospect Bobby Wolfe de-commits from Texas A&M

A&M’s 2019 class took a big blow late Tuesday night as 4-star cornerback prospect Bobby Wolfe announced he was opening up his recruitment.

Wolfe, who had only been committed to A&M for about a month...

Houston, Texas, native is the No. 18 cornerback and the No. 197 overall player for the class of 2019.

A&M’s class is still No. 5 in the country and No. 3 in the SEC, thanks mostly to 5-star safety commit Brian Williams.

Texas A&M legacy Isaiah Spiller de-commits from Oklahoma

It only took Jimbo Fisher a few months to get Texas A&M back in the conversation with 4-star running back Isaiah Spiller.

Spiller, a Texas A&M legacy, committed to Oklahoma back on Nov. 21 when Kevin Sumlin was toward the end of his tenure in College Station. His original commitment video talked about “starting his own legacy.”

But that desire has apparently changed, as Spiller announced his de-commitment from the Sooners Wednesday evening.

  • Now in his second season, Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher is thankful to not be part of late scramble for recruits:

“Last year I was saying, ‘Don’t sign with anybody, let me (still) come see you.' This year we were saying, ‘Sign, sign, sign.’”

A&M’s Jimbo Fisher knows what peers such as the University of Houston’s Dana Holgorsen and other newcomers to their jobs are dealing with right now: Spending their energy on a two-month recruiting offensive instead of, say, fine-tuning a two-minute offense.

A year ago Fisher was one of the guinea pigs of the early signing period, in an unprecedented scramble to lock down a solid recruiting class mostly comprised of prospects drawn to A&M by a different coaching staff.

That’s because Fisher, who has pieced together one of the nation’s top recruiting classes, is settled into his new job. But he’s still empathetic to what the newbies are going through elsewhere, including 100 miles away in Houston.

“I like this a lot better than last year,” said Fisher, who led the Aggies to their first nine-win season (9-4) since 2013. “I only had had two weeks before (signing day) last year. That’s tough on a new coach — I’m not going to lie about that.”

The Aggies entering Fisher’s second season took full advantage of the second year of the early signing period just before Christmas, inking 23 recruits. The adjective “early” already is outdated with the new setup —

Officially official from Texas A&M, and it is 25 signed:

Jimbo Fisher on signing five linebackers, most of any position of the 25: There was an area of need, and we also got the guys we wanted. That was a great combination.
