Report: Zion Williamson to visit South Carolina Saturday

Five-star small forward Zion Williamson will visit South Carolina on Saturday for the Gamecocks first home football game of the season.

That’s according to Phil Kornblut, who recently spoke with Williamson’s stepfather, Lee Anderson.

On Thursday, South Carolina basketball coach Frank Martin conducted an in-home visit with Williamson (6-7, 230) and his family.

“The visit went great, just like all the visits with the coaches so far,” Anderson said. “[Martin’s] message was about the fact they reached the Final Four last season and come help them get to that next level.”

Williamson, a 2018 prospect from Spartanburg (S.C.) Day School, is tentatively set to take official visits to Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and UCLA.

According to the 247Sports composite, he’s ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in the country. The 247Sports Crystal Ball gives Kansas the slight edge over Kentucky. Duke is third and North Carolina is fourth.

What #Alabama is getting in new hoops commit Javian Fleming … @EvanDaniels @jerrymeyer247

Alabama men's basketball added the second commitment in its 2018 on Friday in three-star center Javian Fleming out of Canton (Miss.)

At 6-foot-9, 230 pounds, Fleming is rated the No. 13 center and the No. 208 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

    Daniels says:

Javian Fleming is a strong, physical low post presence. Fleming's biggest value is in his raw strength, ability to carve out space around the goal and prowess on the glass. Fleming is a good area rebounder that isn't afraid to throw his body around in the paint.

At this stage, Fleming's defense is ahead of his offense, but Fleming, who is a below the rim guy, is also a threat to put back offensive misses. He also has good hands, but to impact this end of the floor he'll need to refine his post moves and develop with his back to the rim.

College basketball is here and there are many reasons to be pumped. But first ... is Bryce Drew about to sign a Kentucky-like haul?

One or two great players can transform in college basketball, which actually helps explain why the FBI is now treating it like an organized crime family.

As other SEC programs deal with the fallout, Drew has sold the education, city and chance at ground-floor involvement in a rising program to point guard Darius Garland (Brentwood Academy), shooting guard Romeo Langford (New Albany, Ind.) and big man Simi Shittu (Saxton River, Vt.)

There are indications — in a land of rumors and writing on the wall that I call CrootinVille — that all three may be buying.

That’s three of the top 15 players in the country, per rankings, with Langford at No. 6, Shittu No. 8 and Garland No. 15. That’s Kentucky territory. These are three players who have offers from schools such as Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas … name your favorite blueblood, that blueblood has been interested.

And in this age of short stays and freshman-loaded teams making deep runs, that’s a 2018-19 national contender in Memorial Gym. Drew already has signed forward Aaron Nesmith (Charleston, S.C.) for 2018, beating out Florida and South Carolina among others for him. He has a solid freshman class on campus now. This stuff can happen fast.

It also can change fast, so hold the parade until names appear on the dotted line.

Breaking: Vanderbilt basketball commit Darius Garland among suspended players after locker room incident at Brentwood Academy

“This is not hazing. BA always reviews and follows (Department of Children’s Services) and police reporting requirements. This incident did not warrant notification,” Brentwood Academy spokeswoman Susan Shafer emailed to the Tennessean.

“We had a few guys that didn’t uphold the high expectations of Brentwood Academy, so they have been disciplined,” said Brentwood head coach Hubie Smith. “We’re playing a game Saturday and we’ll have a handful of guys sitting out Saturday. They’ll be back next week.”

The Tennessean also reports that the players were academically suspended as well.

“When the school became aware of an incident [last] Thursday evening, we immediately addressed the issue with students involved and their parents,” Shafer said. “While Brentwood Academy has been transparent about its disciplinary procedures with the students and parents involved, we are committed to protecting the privacy of our students and families.”

These suspensions for this locker room incident happened while Brentwood is in the middle of a lawsuit centered on a sexual assault allegations from the 2014-15 school year. “The lawsuit alleges the boy, John Doe, also was assaulted in a Brentwood Academy  locker room by older basketball players.”

For now, LSU basketball’s Class of 2018 ranks above LSU football

BATON ROUGE, La. — It isn’t too peculiar to see LSU with a top-5 recruiting class in early February — unless the sport in question is basketball.

Will Wade has the Tiger basketball program in position to do something that has only happened one time since recruiting services started fastidiously tracking signing classes as the nternet exploded at the turn of the 21st century.

The exceedingly rare feat? Bringing in a class that ranks higher nationally than an LSU football recruiting class.

With the addition of 5-star power forward Emmitt Williams’ commitment last week, the LSU basketball Class of 2018 rates third in the nation according to 247 Sports. With less than a week to go until signing day, LSU football is 13th.

What are the UGA basketball recruits thinking right now?

Amanze Ngumenzi sounds hopeful about the future of Georgia basketball.

The 6-foot-9, 245-pound point forward from Solomon C. Johnson High School in Savannah ranks as the nation’s No. 26 power forward and the No. 103 overall prospect on the 247Sports composite for 2018.

He signed with UGA back in November. That was a time when things looked hopeful for the Mark Fox era.

    That run has ended.

“Keeping Coach Jonas [Jarvis Hayes' brother who played with him at Georgia] around is important to me because of the way he recruited me and the relationship that he and I have built in that process,” he said.

Ngumenzi said he’s in close contact with Norcross senior forward JoJo Toppin, the other forward the Bulldogs signed back in November.

They both feel the same way about Hayes.

Look for the Bulldogs to have at least one more scholarships to play with for 2018. That is if both of the team’s November signees stick with their letters of intent and do not ask for a release.

Georgia had 13 players on scholarship this season and three of those slots are coming open after player eligibility was exhausted by three seniors of the 2017-2018 team.
