More Stories about UA - Razorback Foundation connection
« on: June 03, 2018, 02:13:08 pm »

Another couple stories from the Dem-Gazette today about the connection between the university and the Razorback foundation:
http://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2018/jun/03/ua-funds-raise-questions-about-public-m/
http://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2018/jun/03/ua-nonprofit-s-7m-topped-off-17-athleti/

It seems like they have had several stories over the last few months. Just trying to sell papers or is there actual smoke there?

Democrat-Gazette just trying to destroy perhaps the best and most unifying thing in Arkansas - the Razorbacks.

Was Husman transparent when he was trying to run the Gazette out of business before he bought it...................transparency is not always required nor should it be.

When it violates the privacy rights of a private individual or organization.

So not here then.

Razorback Foundation is a private organization and the donors are all private individuals.

How is this violating their rights?

(Honest question, I really don't understand.)

If you give money to a private foundation, do you think it should be made public? I really don't have a problem with their contracts with coaches and such being public, but if someone wishes to remain anonymous, they should have that right.

The whole thing is about whether the Foundation is subject to FOIA requests. If it is a public institution, it (probably, usually) is. If it is private it (probably, usually) is not.

Arkansans have a right under the states sunshine laws to know how public money is spent.

But, do they have a right to know who donates to the Foundation and how those private donations are spent? Reasonable people can disagree on this point.

It is “transparent” to me that the dying DemGaz not only has their stinger out for the Razorbacks but would dearly love to cloak themselves with the badge of bringing them to heel, hence their ridiculous constant use of “Arkansas, Fayetteville” every time they refer to the Arkansas Razorbacks.

None of that has anything to do with the merits of the FOIA argument.

But it does have something to do with the Dem-Gazette, Little Rock's motives. They lost and are now going after them (The Foundation).
It's like when Andy Taylor served the summons to arrest newspaper big-wig J. Howard Jackson. Jackson retaliated by trying to dig up dirt on Andy and publishing a smear article.

This is a fight going on in many other states.  Each state has their own version of an Open Records Act so you can't compare them exactly.
Welcome Oklahoma to the same fight...
