I'm glad Macon understands he will have to be a point at the next level, Barford is a volume scorer but he is too small for the 2.  He needs to work on his assists.

This is a link for the tourney.  You can checkout the rosters to see which team they are on and if you scroll down on the homepage there is a link for streaming.

Most of those small combo guards are lighting fast or crazy athletic.  Both Macon and Barford are athletic but I wouldn't say that is there strength.

Barford is athletic, but it's his body that will translate to the league for him.  And the way he's shooting the ball and the fact he gets it off with ease in transition is making a difference too. Can take contact and finish, and he won't be able to be bullied by a bigger guards. Hearing he had a bunch of team interviews today. Opened some eyes.

Glad to see Macon bounce back and hit some shots. He was holding back the first game and wasn't aggressive, which led to turnovers.

Look at that footwork, speed, strength, and control to get he shot off. And the enthusiasm afterwards. Observers will see all that. I think he'll get some bites at a draft spot. Go JB!!

How eyes weren't already open is beyond me. Was top 5 in the SEC in several scoring categories and has the size for the NBA. I guess no one has respect for CMAs system and assume he was just playing street ball

Barford got a nice write-up from SI following his performance at the Portsmouth Invitational. It's an article about under-the-radar seniors that could make some noise in the NBA.

https://www.si.com/nba/2018/04/16/nba-draft-sleepers-portsmouth-invitational-college-seniors

Relevant section:

JAYLEN BARFORD, G, ARKANSAS
Height: 6’3” | Weight: 200 | Age: 22
2017–18 Stats: 17.9 PPG, 2.5 APG, 43.3% 3FG

Barford was named MVP of the tournament after leading his team to a championship, including a buzzer-beating drive and layup in the semifinal round. He confidently drained three-pointers from deep range all week and looked to be in outstanding shape, using his heft and quickness to get into the lane. More than any other player at the tournament, Barford was visibly locked in from a competitive standpoint. While he made some nifty passes, the fear is that he’s still mostly a one-track scorer, and players of that ilk who lack great physical measurables generally need to be elite at their craft. Making the NBA will be a tall challenge, but Barford certainly looked ready to give it a serious try.

While I hope both our guys defy the odds and make an NBA roster, I would caution everyone against reading too much into their performance here, this is against the seniors. We all know that the best players coming out rarely are senoirs. So doing well there basically just maybe gets you on a teams radar, so that they maybe watch you more closely going forward.

I think both guys did well enough to maybe get an invite. Macon's shot seemed off but he showed he could be a good distributor, this is what he is going to have to prove more so than just shooting the ball.

Man I've always appreciated your posts, take on the game and knowledge but Redick is one of the most prolific 3 point shooters in the history of college basketball and has been very good in the NBA. #15 in history in 3 pt% and #30 in made 3 pt shots. 90% Ft shooter in the NBA and 91% at Duke. For perspective he made 91 more 3 pt shots than Pat Bradley and is the all time 3 point career leader in the ACC. Do you think Macon has that kind of shot? I will give you this, it took Redick several years to gain traction, if Macon had the opportunity to get paid for several years to work on his game maybe so. I might have posted in haste. I got to looking more and thinking about the situation more and I guess the possibility isn't that far fetched.

Macon's biggest problem is he won't be a lottery pick and be given years to get his game together and Redick was lucky enough to land on a team that was perfect for capitalizing on his game.

Reddick was/is a great shooter dating back to his Duke days. I wasn't trying to compare the players, simply their game/play style.  His game is similar to Macon's IMO but of course, Reddick has about 2-3 inches of height over Macon. They are similar in the regard of above average athleticism that are 3 point snipers and can handle the ball well enough.  I would go as far to say Macon is more of a facilitator at this point in their careers. I say that to say there is a place in the NBA for a player like Macon.  He may have to take a tough route but he can get there.

Go away. This post is for fans only.
No, you go away.
I'm a bigger fan than you are.

The OP was boasting and bragging how great Macon and Barford are, and were doing at the tournament, and how great they were 'developed' by the staff. The usual CMA agenda stuff, and then the same OP later commented on other people having an agenda.

Ah, the hypocrisy.
So I couldn't resist throwing it back. All in fun.

For what it's worth, I'm not surprised at all by what they're doing at Portsmouth. They were All-SEC players. They're very good. I still don't see them as NBA caliber, maybe can have some moments, but not a steady career. But they should get a chance, anyway.

So.....how did we lose 12 games last year with two all-SEC guards and a future 1st round pick in Gafford?
It's a fair question.

I’ve made this point before.
Usually when fans use this term, they’re using it in a vague, nebulous way. 85% of the time they’re giving coaches credit for something that takes place on its own time and schedule. Speaking of player ‘development’, that is.
Unless you can point out specific things a coach has done to specifically improve a player’s game, it’s not ‘player development’.
Example: a big man comes in raw, and a coach works tirelessly on developing some reliable low post moves. Targeted, specific drills to improve a specific component of the player’s game. Or, maybe a coach offers specific tips and takes the time to work with a guy to improve a player’s free throw shooting, and gets noticeable results. That’s true player development.
Usually, when fans use the term, they’re referring to things that happen on their own, or a player does on their own, or in most cases, it comes through natural physical maturity, emotional maturity, and experience in the program. A coach has little to do with that.

Two examples, using football:
Brandon Allen: He was a 3-star QB coming in, was thrown in the fire early. By 2015, as a 5th-year senior, Allen was playing like 5-star guy. He and the offense was playing as well as anyone in the country. Was this ‘player development’? Not the way I define it. Just by being in the program for five years, Allen knew the offense backwards and forwards. Time took its course and the comfort level grew year by year. And then you have the huge difference between being an 18-year old skinny freshman versus a much more physically mature 23-year young man. This ‘development’ happened largely on its own.

Also, Brandon Burlsworth.
Did a coach help a walk-on, chubby kid become an All-American? Of course coaches help. But Brandon made HIMSELF what he became. His willpower and determination came from within him, and that’s why he became what he became.

I’m not saying coaches do nothing and never help players. Of course they do. I’m just saying ‘player development’ is one of those overused clichés you hear all the time. It’s way overused trying to give coaches credit for something that happened on its own schedule, for the most part.

Back to Macon and Barford…they came into the program as Top 5 juco players. They played up to that billing. Macon was pretty stead both years, Barford took longer to get comfortable at this level. They followed the usual juco pattern of giving you good things in year 1 and take off in year 2 after a year of experience at this level. It’s very common.

It's a fair question.

The same reason UK lost 11 games with two lottery picks, another projected first-rounder, and at least two other players that will most likely be drafted higher than Barford and Macon.

We played the 25th most difficult schedule in the country according to Pomeroy.  Only 5 of the teams with more difficult schedules, including 2 of the FF teams, managed less than double-digit losses. Of the next 25 behind us in SOS 21 lost at least 12 games.
