Chris Holtmann went from HC of Gardner Webb to Butler assistant to Butler interim HC to Butler HC to Ohio State HC in four years. Unreal.

Not sure why everyone seems to be throwing Tom Crean’s name around. I get he is available, but isn’t there a reason why?

What’s the over/under on the number of committees formed to help clean up college hoops?  I think I’m going to start a media committee.

Does this pay like a search committee?

No, it’s pro bono — and you won’t be able to get another job from it, either.

Bruce Pearl's on thin ice at Auburn... and the ice may be cracking  https://trib.al/OniedXG  via @KevinScarbinsky

Quote
Scarblog: Maybe Bruce Pearl can survive this storm. Maybe he and his employer can settle their differences and go back to business as usual.

On Thursday, Pearl tried to make his regular press conference before Friday's season opener seem as normal as possible, but there's nothing normal about Auburn basketball at the moment beyond its familiarity with self-inflicted drama. AL.com sources familiar with the situation have said that Pearl's on thin ice and the ice may be cracking beneath his feet.

When ESPN reported Wednesday evening that, according to its sources, Pearl's job may be in jeopardy because he was "refusing to cooperate" in Auburn's internal investigation, it may or may not have been a completely accurate appraisal of the situation. It did seem to be a clear shot across the coach's bow.

Pearl's camp would have nothing to gain by leaking word of his own alleged insubordination. Auburn would, if it were interested in floating a trial balloon to try to influence public opinion before the eventual dismissal of a popular head coach.

In Thursday's press conference, Pearl wouldn't address the notion that his job may be in jeopardy, but there are people close to Auburn who believe that the relationship between him and the administration is near the breaking point.

Given that the season begins Friday night in the Auburn Arena against Norfolk State, it would seem incumbent upon the university to correct any public misconception about Pearl's standing with his employer. To this point, the university has said nothing, using the ongoing federal investigation as a justification for its silence.

That's unfair to the staff, the players and the fans who still believe Pearl will find a way to make Auburn basketball relevant, despite the disappointing results of his first three seasons.

Jeff Eisenberg‏ @JeffEisenberg

Tom Izzo will remain under fire until he stops sidestepping tough questions and starts answering them.

Quote
Maybe he wants to say more. Maybe his attorneys have advised him to stay silent. Maybe university administrators have asked him to stick to a specific script.

Whatever the situation, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is doing himself a disservice by continuing to not be more open and transparent about his handling of sexual assault allegations against several of his former players.

An ESPN “Outside The Lines” reporter asked Izzo a series of tough but fair questions on Sunday after Michigan State’s victory at Maryland. The first two pertained to Travis Walton, an ex-Michigan State player reportedly accused of raping a female Michigan State student in 2010 while serving as a student-assistant on Izzo’s staff.

Asked why Walton was still a part of the program at the time of the alleged rape even though he had been accused of punching a different female student in the face at a bar a few months earlier, Izzo sidestepped the question. He also insisted he doesn’t recall if the rape allegation was why Walton left the Michigan State program later in 2010.

“We’ll cooperate with any investigation and always have,” Izzo said. “We’ve done it before and we’ll do it moving forward. That’s about all I’m going to say about it.

“I’m not going to answer any questions that aren’t pertaining to basketball or things that I’m not going to talk about right now.”

The tense exchange ended with “Outside The Lines” reporter Tisha Thompson asking Izzo if he has any regrets about how his program has handled sexual assault allegations in the past. Izzo again gave a similar non-answer, declining to address either the Walton incidents or his decision not to suspend former players Keith Appling and Adreian Payne ...

One of the frustrating parts of Izzo not answering key questions is that he has a reputation for being honest and principled.

I’m told Kevin Stallings has informed them he will not accept the reduced buyout of about $7.5M that Pitt boosters had hoped he would. He wants $9.4M and it is headed for a showdown — or most likely Pitt paying the whole thing to part with him.

Tubby Smith knows this may be the end. Column:

Quote
ORLANDO, Fla. — Asked if he had coached his last game at Memphis, Tubby Smith said, simply, “Who knows?”

Answer: He does. Everyone does.

You could hear it in the way Smith phrased the question, with a tone of weary resignation. He sounded like a 66-year-old man who has been through this get-rid-of-the-coach circus twice before.

Any hope that Smith and his Tigers would go on a magical run to save Smith’s job was dispelled Saturday when Cincinnati defeated Memphis by double digits for the third time this season, 70-60.

“It was a tale of two halves,” said Smith.
