  • Mizzou looks to develop new recruits

But the reality is, Mizzou’s new class doesn’t look very good. On paper, it looks Vanderbilt-good (well, Vanderbilt-bad). OK, yes, but the hope for fans is that coach Barry Odom, like his predecessor Gary Pinkel, can take two-star talents and turn them into four-star standouts.

“Gary did such a great job with his philosophy on true evaluation and numbers — really digging down deep,” Odom said Thursday night, from a St. Louis event put together by the Mizzou Tiger Club. “That’s one of the many things I admired about him, just the way he approached that, really getting a true evaluation of a kid, more than height and weight, but looking at how a kid could be, and how can we develop him in three years down the road? And he absolutely hit on a whole bunch of them who have been really good players.”

Pinkel’s program thrived for years because of development.

Blog: We tackle the age-old "Do recruiting rankings matter?" question and come up with that shrugging guy emoticon- .

"Recruiting rankings mean nothing!" one will tell you.

"Recruiting rankings mean everything!" the other will say.

We took the 12 offensive and defensive players that played the most for Missouri over the past three seasons (the only years we've kept our snap counts) and sized them up by 247Sports' composite star rankings...

So what, if anything, does this teach us.

For one team in a very limited sample of three years, it appears talent (247Sports composite rating) has more to do with success than time put in (average years in the system or starting).

    Yes, even at Missouri.

    Recapping Missouri's national signing day

Geography almost prevents Missouri Tigers from landing classes that rank alongside some of the Tigers’ SEC rivals at the top of the leaderboard. First-year head coach Barry Odom signed a class that ESPN ranked 51st nationally, indicating that, like predecessor Gary Pinkel, player development will remain an especially important aspect of the Missouri head coach’s job where the 2016 signees are concerned.

Missouri’s biggest need heading in to NSD: As good as the defense was, the offense was a complete disaster. From quarterback instability to inconsistent receivers to an impotent running game, Missouri’s offense lacked it all -- and the Tigers desperately needed to add some explosiveness to the mix.

There are not many sure things in this class, but running back Natereace Strong should be one of them. The No. 28 overall prospect on ESPN’s JC 50, Strong is the downhill runner that Missouri wants in its backfield and is the highest-rated signee in the class. He and three-star running back Damarea Crockett will immediately jump into the mix in a position group that lost Russell Hansbrough and returns leading rusher Ish Witter.

COLUMBIA, MO. • When Missouri coach Barry Odom unveils his second recruiting class in a few weeks, the casual fan might have trouble distinguishing most of the prospects. A thin pool of in-state recruits pushed Odom’s staff beyond the state border to fill the 2017 class, a strategy Odom planned before the bulk of area prospects committed elsewhere.

Odom continues to assign assistant coaches to recruit regions of the country, but his staff also recruits for their specific position group. That’s led to a more national approach for this year’s class. Odom’s staff has crisscrossed the map from New Mexico to Michigan to New York to land commitments.

“That’s something we’re trying to build on and use,” Odom said last month. Defensive line coach “Brick Haley is one of the best in the country. For him to walk in and show (recruits) who he’s coached and what he’s done, that can help us out. It’s the same with coach (Josh) Heupel coaching the quarterback position. We’re more position specific going forward.”

Three of MU’s 21 commitments have already signed financial aid agreements and will enroll in classes for the winter semester, which starts Tuesday. The other 18 recruits, and any more Mizzou picks up the next three weeks, can begin signing national letters of intent Feb. 1.

The 21 high school and junior college players who have pledged verbal commitments to Mizzou attend schools in 15 different states. That’s more states represented than any other class across the Southeastern Conference. The Tigers have just one commitment from a player who attends high school in Missouri, wide receiver Da’Ron Davis from Lee’s Summit North. Jafar Armstrong, a receiver from the Kansas City area, lives in Missouri but attends high school in Kansas, at Bishop Miege in Shawnee Mission...
