Buzz at Auburn despite non-Power 5 opponent

Quote
Recruiting has picked up steam since beating the nationís top-ranked team at the time. This shouldnít come as a surprise.

Itís placed Auburn in a situation it hasnít been in for, at least, the last two recruiting cycles. The Tigers finally have some momentum. Auburn is the place to be a week from now, just as it was the place to be a week ago.

In only a week since the Auburn-Georgia game, several important recruiting events have occurred. Most importantly, Auburn picked up its first cornerback in the Class of 2018. Christian Tutt chose Auburn over Ohio State and Nebraska.

Auburn hosted several high-priority prospects in the 2019 and 2020 classes for the Louisiana-Monroe game. A few commits were in attendance. The weekend didnít have as much buzz as the week prior, but with so much to look ahead to next week, there were still several recruiting tidbits to take away from the day:

2020 running back Deondre Jackson commits to Auburn, gives the Tigers their second commitment of the day and second in 2020 class http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2017/12/2020_running_back_deondra_jack.html Ö

Auburn picked up its second commitment of the day on Tuesday and its second overall commit in the 2020 class.

Stephenson High (Lithonia, Ga.) running back Deondre Jackson committed to the Tigers on Tuesday night, just hours after 2018 Australian punter Arryn Siposs officially committed to the program.

Jackson is the second commit in Auburn's 2020 class, joining defensive end Andy Boykin, who committed last month.

Auburn lands best high school QB signee in years in Joey Gatewood

Quote
Projection for 2018: Auburn has just three quarterbacks on the roster but Stidham is clearly the starter for as long as he's on the Plains. Realistically, Auburn will likely look to redshirt Gatewood in 2018, which was the plan for Malik Willis before Sean White was dismissed.

Auburn commit Richard Jibunor Tweets short statement following DUI arrest

Quote
Jibunor was booked into the Athens-Clarke County Jail at 4:38 a.m. ET before being released on $2,000 bond about three hours later. He was charged with DUI as well as failing to maintain lane and improper driving.

Jibunor is a 4-star pass rusher recruit out of Athens, Georgia. He chose the Tigers over offers from Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Louisville and several other major programs.

Jibunor did not sign during the early signing period from Dec. 20-22. He could still de-commit or part ways with the Tigers. Because he did not sign, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn can not publicly comment on this situation.

How Herb Hand's departure impacts Auburn's offensive line recruiting, just three weeks ahead of signing day: https://trib.al/r9vqJWo  via @tomas_verde

AL.com sports‏Verified account @aldotcomSports

He's baaack!

J.B. Grimes returns as Auburn's offensive line coach:

Quote
One of Auburn's biggest remaining needs before National Signing Day just became its biggest challenge.

Auburn signed two linemen during December's early signing period, but coach Gus Malzahn said the team needed another "impact O-lineman or two" to close out the class as Auburn tries to replace four starters along the line. Doing so became more difficult on Tuesday, as offensive line coach Herb Hand left the program to become the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator at Texas. That leaves Malzahn with a position to fill on his coaching staff and the Tigers with a greater sense of urgency in offensive line recruiting with three weeks remaining in the recruiting cycle.

"We'd like to be at 15 (linemen), that's why we still want to get two more guys in this class," Hand told AL.com last week in Charlotte. "We feel good. With three guys coming back that have all started multiple SEC games and (Prince) Tega (Wanogho) played a lot of reps for us at left tackle and played well. I'm real excited about what we have coming back and we got to have some guys step up and we've got to continue to develop them. I like where we're at."

Last month, Auburn signed four-star lineman Jalil Irvin and three-star lineman Kameron Stutts during the early signing period, and both were on campus last weekend for their official visits. Irvin projects as a center at Auburn, while Stutts is expected to play guard in college.

Star running back Deondre Jackson de-commits from Auburn

Quote
Auburn took an early blow in the 2020 recruiting cycle as star running back Deondre Jackson announced his de-commitment from the Tigers.

Due to his youth, Jackson doesnít have a star rating from any of the major recruiting services. But his offer list should suffice: Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, Louisville and Tennessee...

With National Signing Day 2018 in the books and Auburn's class of 24 signees, here's a look back at what we thought the Tigers needed a year ago https://trib.al/eF0HIFS

Quote
Quarterback

Projection: 1 or 2
Actual: 1 - Joey Gatewood

Running back

Projection: 2-3
Actual: 3 - Asa Martin, Harold Joiner, Shaun Shivers

Offensive line

Projection: 5-7
Actual: 2 - Jalil Irvin, Kam Stutts
Why we were off: Auburn failed to meet its stated goal of at least five offensive linemen. It's possible graduate transfers offset this shortfall slightly.

Defensive line

Projection: 2-3
Actual: 5 - Richard Jibunor, Daquan Newkirk, Caleb Johnson, Coynis Miller, Kayode Oladele
Why we were off: Departures of Antwuan Jackson and Byron Cowart were not anticipated.

Auburn's top quarterback targets in 2019 class

Quote
Bo Nix (6-foot-2, 194 pounds, Pinson)

Nix, the son of former Tigers quarterback Patrick Nix, committed to Auburn on Jan. 10 to give the program its second overall commitment in the 2019 class. Nix is a four-star prospect who is rated as the nation's top dual-threat quarterback and the No. 75 overall prospect in the class.

IN-STATE GLANCE

Nix is the state's top quarterback prospect, with four-star Thompson pro-style passer Taulia Tagovailoa -- the little brother of Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa -- not far behind. Tagovailoa is expected to end up with the Tide, like his brother, while four-star Hewitt-Trussville pro-style quarterback Paul Tyson (Bear Bryant's great grandson), is also projected to end up at Alabama, according to 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions. Neither Tagovailoa or Tyson hold offers from Auburn.

Looking ahead to Auburn's current quarterbacks in 2018

Jarrett Stidham, redshirt junior; Malik Willis, sophomore.

Hewitt-Trussville WR Ja'Varrius Johnson commits to Auburn

Quote
Auburn has added a wide receiver to its 2019 recruiting class.

Hewitt-Trussville's Ja'Varrius Johnson committed to the Tigers on Friday after attending a camp on=campus.

"Extremely blessed to say I have receive an offer from Auburn University, and I want to thank coach Gus Malzahn for the opportunity to be an Auburn Tiger!" Johnson tweeted. "100% committed to Auburn University, War Eagle"

Johnson, who is not yet ranked in the 247Sports Composite, is the second receiver and ninth player overall to commit to Auburn's 2019 class.

He becomes the second Hewitt-Trussville player to commit to Auburn since Gus Malzahn's former quarterback Josh Floyd took over as coach in the summer of 2014, joining current Tigers cornerback Noah Igbinoghene.

4-star Theodore 2020 linebacker Demouy Kennedy commits to Auburn

Quote
Auburn grabbed its fourth commit of the 2020 class on Saturday.

Four-star linebacker Demouy Kennedy out of Theodore committed to the Tigers while on campus for Auburn's end-of-summer recruiting cookout. Kennedy is rated as the No. 15 outside linebacker in the 2020 class, the No. 9 player in Alabama and the 228th-ranked player in the country.

Kennedy chose Auburn over offers from Alabama and Ole Miss. The rising junior, who grew up an Alabama fan, cited his strong relationship with linebackers coach Travis Williams as well as how he feels Auburn can "prepare you for life" as reasons he chose the Tigers over the Tide and Rebels.

Auburn adds QB commitment from Cord Sandberg, a former Mississippi State signee, minor leaguer

Quote
Auburn's quarterback room added a new face on Monday.

Cord Sandberg, a one-time four-star quarterback who spent the last six years playing minor league baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, committed to the Tigers as a (very) late addition to their 2018 signing class.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Sandberg will arrive on campus this week in time for the start of fall camp. The 2013 Mississippi State signee shouldn't factor into Auburn's quarterback picture this season -- certainly not with Jarrett Stidham cemented as the returning starter --

Whoa. Auburn plans to host more than 40 recruits for tomorrow's Washington game in Atlanta:

Auburn will host roughly 100 recruits at Mercedes-Benz Stadium when it takes on Washington on Saturday.

Make have to take the red shirts off some of the new bag men to have enough to give the kind of attention necessary to not have this happen:

"Auburn loses commitment from 2020 4-star defensive end Andy Boykin...

Boykin visited Auburn several times last season..."
