Former Tiger great Patrick Peterson makes generous commitment to LSU

The former LSU great and current NFL star made a $1 million commitment to his old school on Saturday, according to an LSU press release.

“LSU is a wonderful place that helped me develop into the person that I am today,” Peterson said in a statement. “I hope that my donation will encourage and inspire former student-athletes to give back.”

To honor Peterson’s gift, which will go toward the renovation of LSU’s Football Operations Center, the school will name its new weight room the Peterson-Roberts weight room.

Cade Foster, Leigh Tiffin share unique view inside the head of a struggling kicker

Tiffin's been out of college kicking for six seasons now. He recently opened a new RV dealership and is back home in northern Alabama. He called kicking at Alabama from 2006-09 was an incredible experience, but he doesn't miss it. He finds the pressure hard to explain.

That makes it hard to watch games like Saturday's when Griffith missed a 24-yard chip to close the first half.

  • LSU football legend Billy Cannon firmly aboard Leonard Fournette's Heisman bandwagon

Billy Cannon, LSU's one and only Heisman Trophy winner, is in his 56th season waiting for another Tiger to stand beside him in college football's most elite club.

There were some past possibilities, such as two-way star Jerry Stovall finishing second in the 1962 Heisman voting, quarterback Bret (rhymes with dirt) Jones fourth in 1972, and running back Charles Alexander and defensive back Tyrann Mathieu both fifth in 1978 and 2011, respectively.

Yet after what Cannon, winner of the 1959 Heisman, saw last Saturday vs. Auburn when LSU's Leonard Fournette ran for three touchdowns and 228 of the most vicious yards ever witnessed in Tiger Stadium, he likes his chances of finally shaking hands with a fellow purple-and-gold Heisman winner.

"I'm going to borrow what Bear Bryant said about John David," said Cannon, referring to Louisiana native and 1957 Heisman winner John David Crow of Texas A&M where Bryant coached prior to Alabama. "Bear said, 'If they don't give John David Crow the Heisman Trophy, they should quit giving it.' ...

Former #Alabama player, assistant and head-coaching candidate Richard Williamson dies of heart attack in Charlotte

Richard Williamson died of a heart attack in Charlotte, N.C., former Alabama teammate Tommy Brooker confirmed to

A player under Bear Bryant who caught Joe Namath's first Alabama touchdown pass, Williamson went on to a long coaching career. He retired in 2010 at age 68 as the receivers coach of the Carolina Panthers.

Williamson was a candidate to be the head coach of the Crimson Tide three times. First, he was a strong name in 1990 when Gene Stallings ultimately replaced Bill Curry. He was again a candidate after Stallings' 1996 retirement and then in 2003 after Mike Price's brief tenure. He interviewed with then-president Robert Witt, as did Sylvester Croom when Mike Shula eventually got the job.

There was always interest when the job came open.

"Why wouldn't I be?'' Williamson said in 1996. "It was my university, it's got to be one of the top jobs in America."

After finishing an All-SEC career in 1962, Williamson was an assistant from 1963-67, then again from 1970-71. He had a 32-34 record in his only college head coaching job with Memphis from 1975-80. He was also the head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1990-91.

  • Thirty Mile Zone: Fournette Is Better Than I Was In College

"He's better than I was," Walker says ... noting that Fournette is the clear frontrunner for the Heisman.

Herschel says he's extremely impressed with Fournette's athleticism AND his toughness -- "He's like a fullback because he can take punishment and keep on going."

But Walker says there are two other RBs blowing his mind this season -- Derrick Henry from Alabama and Nick Chub from Georgia.

"I'm happy to see them play! People have been discounting running backs the past couple of years. These guys are bringing back the position."
